Disney Pixar Brave Wins Best Animated Feature Oscar

disneypixarbravemerida

A well deserved win for Disney Pixar’s Brave movie of the Best Animated Feature at the Oscar awards last night. Some felt it was not the favorite to win against fellow Disney movie nominees Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie and Disney’s Wreck it Ralph films. The two other Oscar nominees were Laika/Focus Features’ “ParaNorman” and Sony’s “The Pirates! Band of Misfits.”

But Princess Merida triumphed over all and took home the golden statue. Well perhaps not Merida herself but co directors Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman on her behalf.

If you haven’t yet seen this Pixar movie it is now available on DVD at:

Brave (Three-Disc Collector’s Edition: Blu-ray / DVD)

Pixar has an amazing history of wins at the Oscar Ceremony over the years. The win for Brave gave Pixar it’s 27th Oscar. A remarkable achievement for a relatively young studio, and even more remarkable when you consider that in the last six years it has won the Best Animated Feature Academy Award five times. Finding Nemo” (2003), “The Incredibles” (2004), “Ratatouille” (2007), “Wall-E” (2008), “Up” (2009) and “Toy Story 3″ (2010) have all won the Best Animated Feature Oscar for Pixar.

It was a great night for Disney at the 2013 Oscars as they also picked up the award for Best Animated Short for the movie Paperman. The producer of Paperman Kristina Reed was escorted out of her seat by security for reportedly throwing paper planes, like the ones in the movie. Security at the event were not entertained, even though the planes had kisses on the , just as they do in the movie! It seems that they relented though and she was back in her seat within 10 minutes.

Paperman is a black and white animated movie which tells the story of a man who tries to attract the attention of a woman by flying paper airplanes. It is a beautiful story which was originally shown in theaters with Wreck it Ralph. If you want to see this delightful movie you can get this as a bonus to Wreck-It Ralph (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Disney’s Brave Ways to Celebrate New Year!

Disney Pixar’s Brave movie was one of the highlights of the year. And now you can celebrate in traditional Scottish style for the New Year with lots of Hogmanay ideas!

The Scottish Hogmanay celebrations date back to ancient times and now you can celebrate the traditions with a Disney Pixar Brave twist. Just click on the picture above for some fun activities to share with your family!

Cleaning up around the house, hanging good luck charms in doorways and singing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ are just a few ways that Scots encourage good luck to come through their door on the last night of the year.

Brave was one of the best family movies of the year and is now available for a very reasonable $19.99 for the 3 Disc Collectors set.

Brave (Three-Disc Collector’s Edition: Blu-ray / DVD)

Princess Merida is a very modern royal who wants to determine her own fate. The tradition is that she should marry one of the suitors chosen by her parents who all compete to win her hand in marriage. Merida has other ideas and runs from the kingdom determined that she will choose her own destiny.

Of course things don’t go quite as Princess Merida planned – an encounter with a witch in the woods leaves her with a very big problem to solve. The voice cast is (mostly) authentically Scottish, with such talent as Kelly MacDonald, Billy Connolly, and Robbie Coltraine. This looks like a Harry Potter reunion where you will also find Emma Thompson and Julie Walters!

Look out for Merida in the Disney parks. You can find her in Magic Kingdom in Disney World, and near It’s a Small World in Disneyland.

Princess Merida in Disney’s Magic Kingdom and Disneyland

Princess Merida has arrived in Disney World Magic Kingdom and Disneyland for a meet and greet with guests. The new Disney Princess Merida meet and greet location is to the right of Cinderella’s Castle inside the Fairytale Garden.

In the true spirit of the sentiment that Merida is very much an ‘action’ Princess you will not only be able to meet her but there is also a chance to brush u on your archery skills.

In Disneyland you can find Princess Merida close to It’s A Small World, opposite Disney Princess Fantasy Faire.

I have to admit that at first I was a little skeptical as to how well the Merida character would translate to ‘reality’ in the Disney parks. But judging from the feedback and all the already huge popularity of the Merida costumes this looks like it is going to be a merchandising hit for Disney Pixar. This level of interest even before the movie is out is a great sign.

Princess Merida seems to be a great role model for young girls. Gone are the days when a Princess has to sit around and wait for a Prince to save her. Yes I adore Cinderella but only if I don’t stop to think about what a difficult message that is to grow up with. Princess Merida is one of the new age of Disney Princesses – and a first female lead for a Disney Pixar movie.

It seems certain that Princess Merida is going to be a huge hit at the movies, and that there will be plenty of guests wanting to see her at Disney World and Disneyland. Perhaps even shoot an arrow with her…..

Disney Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray DVD Diamond Edition

Beauty and the Beast was one of the movies which revived the fortunes of Disney animation in the 1990s and remains one of the most beloved of all the Disney movies. Now for a limited time you can own Beauty and the Beast on Blu-ray DVD. But time is running out as it goes back into the Disney Vault on April 30th 2012.

It is difficult to believe that it has been over 20 years since Beauty and the Beast was released. Disney animation had experienced some difficult years but the Disney Princess revival which began with The Little Mermaid continued with the release of Beauty and the Beast in 1991.

Belle was a new, stronger, Disney Princess. Whilst she did still meet her handsome Prince in the end, she was intelligent and determined not to accept the hand of the shallow Gaston.

Things could have turned out very differently for Beauty and the Beast. Jeffrey Katzenbery, who was the Walt Disney World Studios Chairman at the time, ordered that the movie be halted and started over in 1989 after seeing the first storyboard reels for the production. This meant that new directors were brought in and production time had to be cut from 4 years to just 2 years. You would never know from the beautiful finished product which is one of the great triumphs of Disney animation.

The Computer Animation Production System (which was developed by Pixar) was used for only the second time, and it is this which creates the amazing richness of color and shading. I still remember seeing the beautiful animation for the first time and it looked truly amazing. Of course we are used to such amazingly vivid animated movies these days but this was groundbreaking at the time.

Much of the success of the movie is due to the amazing score written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman including the most memorable ‘Human Again’ and ‘Be Our Guest’.

To date to Beauty and the Beast movie is estimated to have grossed almost $425 million worldwide.
