Monstrous Summer at Walt Disney World and Disneyland With 24 Hour Park Opening Event

disneyparksmonstoursummer24hour

Are you ready for a Monstrous Summer at Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom and Disneyland? The Magic Kingdom, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks will open on 6 a.m. Friday, May 24 and stay open until 6 a.m. Saturday, May 25. Anyone going to go for 24 hours?

The event is of course tied in to celebrate the impending much anticipated release of Disney Pixar Monsters University on June 21st.

There will be special Monsters University themed events, special characters and parades. In Disney World Magic Kingdom this will include characters in their pajamas in Town Square, and late night dance parties in and around the courtyard of Cinderella Castle. Mike and Sulley from Monsters University will be the Grand Marshals of the “Celebrate a Dream Come True” parade and make special appearances in Tomorrowland.

In Disneyland the Monsters University characters will appear with Star Wars characters in Tomorrowland. There will be a late-night Character Pajama Party in Mickey’s ToonTown. Fantasy Faire Royal Theatre will host a Royal Dance Hall party. Hop on over to Disney California Adventure park to watch the Monsters University float in the Pixar Parade.

It will be interesting to see how the parks manage the crowds this time. When Disneyland opened for 24 hours last Leap Year it was so popular they actually had to stop issuing tickets for hours. Reports were of some guests standing in line for hours and chaos in the parks with huge lines for rides and food. The surrounding freeways were jammed as people tried to even reach the parks.

I am sure that Disney have learned from this experience but it isn’t clear at this moment what they are doing to accommodate the possible huge increase in visitors.

There will of course be special merchandise available with limited editions available. Will you be going to the 24 hour opening at Disneyland or Magic Kingdom?

Disneyland Offers Annual Passholders Extended Hours in the Park in February

Disneyland has just announced that annual Passholders will have the extra benefit of an additional 2 hours after regular park closing to enjoy most attractions, dining and store locations in Disney California Adventure Park.

The dates for Disneyland Annual Passholder Extended Hours are:

Disney California Adventure park closes at 8pm to regular guests for most of those days (except 21st when it is 9pm). So annual pass holders will be able to enjoy the attractions until 10 pm or 11pm on 21st.

You will need to check in for the event and get a wrist band. Of course an annual pass will be required and photo id may be required.

From noon to the start of the event you can get your wristband inside the Main Entrance of Disney California Adventure Park to the right of the turnstiles. Once the event has started you get your wristband at the Main Entrance turnstiles to Disney California Adventure Park.

It is great to see Disneyland offering more benefits to pass holders and I am sure we will take advantage of this! Radiator Springs in the dark is one of my new favorite experiences.

Disneyland And Disney’s California Adventure Ride Closures January 2013

What are the Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure Ride and Attraction closures for January 2013? The parks constantly need refurbishment so it is always wise to check what the closure schedule is before you visit any park.

The major closure right now in Disneyland is Big Thunder Mountain which is undergoing a major refurbishment and will not reopen until October 30th 2013. Disney has confirmed that Big Thunder Mountain will get new ride vehicles, track will be replaced (but no changes to the current course, and that portions of the mountain will be repainted. This is my 6 year old’s favorite Disneyland ride at the moment so it is going to be a long wait until Fall 2013!

There are some other scheduled ride closures right now at Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure Park:

Disneyland Closures

Now – May 22, 2013: Troubadour Tavern is closed.

Jan. 28 – Feb. 14, 2013: Mad Tea Party will be closed for refurbishment.
Jan. 28 – 31, 2013: The west entrance tunnel and Tour Gardens will be closed for refurbishment.
Feb. 25 – March 7, 2013: Goofy’s Playhouse will be closed for refurbishment.
Feb. 26–28, 2013: Star Tours will operate at reduced capacity due to refurbishment.

Disney’s California Adventure Park

Now – Feb. 7, 2013: Condor Flats restrooms will be closed for refurbishment.
Now – Feb. 14, 2013: Silly Symphony Swings will be closed for refurbishment.
Now – Feb. 28, 2013: Grizzly River Run will be closed for refurbishment.
Jan. 28 – 31, Feb. 4-7, 2013: World of Color will not be presented.

The months of January and February are always heavy on closures and refurbishments simply because the crowds are lighter at these times of the year. Even though this could look like a big list the only major, lengthy closure right now is for Big Thunder Mountain – there is still plenty to keep you busy in Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure Park!

Disneyland Resort Hotel Benefits

What are the benefits of staying at a Disneyland Resort Hotel? There are many hotels to choose from which are close to the Disneyland and Disney California Adventure park but none is quite as special as the hotels of the Disneyland resort. Here is a discussion about the benefits of staying in a Disney hotel so that you can decide if it is the right choice for you and your family.

Disneyland Resort Hotel Choices

There are 3 Disneyland Resort Hotels. The Paradise Pier, Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa. They are all very different in character and price range. The lowest prices are generally found at the Paradise Pier and the highest at the Grand Californian.

The Paradise Pier is a great choice for families who want to stay close to all the action for a reasonable price. Disneyland Hotel offers much larger rooms and the best pool complex for children of all of the Disneyland hotels. The Grand Californian is a very luxurious hotel which is just steps away from the California Adventure Park.

All of the Disneyland Hotels offer the following benefits:

Location

Location and proximity to the parks is a huge benefit of staying in a Disneyland Resort Hotel. You can easily walk to the parks. The Grand Californian is closest, but the Paradise Pier and Disneyland Hotel are both within very easy walking distance to Disneyland, California Adventure and Downtown Disney.

The advantage of location, as well as the obvious one about saving your energy, is that it saves you time. You can be up and out in the parks quickly in the morning. If you stay elsewhere it is likely you will either have a long walk to the parks, or you will have to use the Disney parking lot. It takes quite a bit of time to access the parks from the parking lot – this is time which of course could be better spent in the park!

Disney Resort Extra Magic Hour

This is a huge reason to stay in one of the Disneyland Resort Hotels. The Extra Magic Hour lets guests access into the parks for one hour prior to the general public opening. This is a significant benefit.

The schedule does vary throughout the year but usually there is early entry to Disneyland on 3 days of the week and to California Adventure park for 4 days of the week. We find early entry into California Adventure Park particularly beneficial as it can allow you to ride Radiator Springs Racers twice or sometimes even three times before the general public arrives!

Our advice is to arrive early for the Extra Magic Hours. Lines were starting to form around 45 minutes before early entry. The early bird gets the most rides!

Disneyland Resort Guests Exclusive Entrance

There is an entrance which is reserved exclusively for guests of the Disneyland Resort which is located in the Grand Californian Hotel. This is a huge benefit as it gets you quickly into the California Adventure park. It makes the entrance and exit from the park even more convenient if you are staying in either the Grand Californian Hotel or the Paradise Pier.

Key to the Magic and Package Express

Your Disneyland Resort room key allows you to charge all your Disney purchases to your room account. This is not a huge benefit but is a nice to have convenience.

The Package Express gives resort guests the opportunity to have any purchases in the parks and Downtown Disney delivered to their hotel. We have rarely used this facility as often we forget about it – but on our last visit we used it quite a bit and found it very convenient. Much better than having to carry your purchases around the parks.

The Disney Theme

All Disney hotels are special. The themes are all very different and we have our favorite elements of each hotel but all of them are wonderfully themed.

For us the most magical rooms are in the Disneyland Hotel. We love the nostalgic pictures of Walt Disney on the walls, and the new magical headboard which has the Disneyland Castle on it and plays A Dream is a Wish Your Heart makes. Paradise Pier has it’s own beach, very laid back style with lots of Disney touches. The Grand Californian Hotel feels as though you have stepped into another world entirely. The Disney theme is there but is very subtle – it is more like the ambience of a nostalgic, grand but welcoming, national park hotel. One of our ver favorites of all of the Disneyland and Disney World hotels.

Whichever one of the Disneyland Resort Hotels you choose you will be sure to have a very magical stay. The benefits of the Disneyland Resort Hotels are well worth it will make your visit to the parks even more special.

Disneyland at Christmas Time

Disneyland at Christmas time is a very magical place. With all the decorations and special attractions Christmas time is a special celebration for Disneyland. Holidays at Disneyland run from Nov. 12 through Jan. 6, 2013 so there is still time to go and experience this very special season.

Here are some of our favorite attractions to experience during the Holidays at Disneyland. There are so many things to do at Disneyland at Christmas time!

Disney Cars Land at Christmas

This is the first year that Disney Cars Land has featured in the California Adventure park and the Pixar animation and the Disney Imagineers have certainly made sure that this debut is very special. One of the first things that they realized was that this is a land where cars live, not people, so the decorations should reflect that.

You will find of decorations made of hub caps, traffic cones, oil cans, and other cars memorabilia. There is even a giant tree made out of tires! We hear that the decorations took 6 days to install – twice as long as they had anticipated.

Here is a video from Disney parks giving you a taste of what to expect in Cars Land at Christmas time!

When visiting Cars Land do not forget to ride on Radiator Springs Racers – this is one of the very best Disney park attractions and should not be missed. Just make sure that you get a Fast Pass as it is very popular!

Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle

The Sleeping Beauty Castle is always a beautiful sight but at Christmas time it is particularly stunning. During the Holidays the Disneyland Castle is sprinkled with snow, and has 80,000 twinkling lights. You must make sure that you are in the park after dusk as the Sleeping Beauty Winter Castle is spectacular at night.

The Sleeping Beauty Winter Castle is of course the back drop for another Disneyland Christmas time favorite – the Believe in Holiday Magic fireworks show. This is a must see for your trip to Disneyland. This 13 minute show is one of the most beloved of all the Disney fireworks shows. And of course you must see the snow fall on Main Street!

Disneyland A Christmas Fantasy Parade

No visit to Disneyland is complete without watching the parade – and Christmas time is no exception! The Christmas Fantasy Parade is another big favorite complete with reindeers, skating snowflakes, ballerinas, Disney Princesses and of course Santa makes an appearance. To get you best viewing spot you do have to stake it out early but the wait is certainly worth it!

Disneyland It’s A Small World at Christmas Time

Another Disneyland attraction which is completely transformed for the Holidays is It’s A Small World. This is our favorite time of year to ride It’s A Small World – a wonderfully over the top celebration of the Holidays around the world.

Try to visit It’s A Small World after dark as the lights on the outside are beautiful. The interior of the ride is also completely transformed – even the music has a Holiday theme.

Disneyland Haunted Mansion Holiday at Time

The Holidays are our absolute favorite time to experience The Haunted Mansion. The inspiration is Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas and The Haunted Mansion is transformed into a Jack Skellington extravaganza. Halloween meets Christmas time – and the result is amazing.

The outside of the Haunted Mansion gives you a taste of the extravagance and spookiness inside. Pumpkins, candles, fake snow – it is all there in the line for this amazing attraction. Overly decorated works though!

Inside the Haunted Mansion you will see lots of additional audio animatronic figures. And one of the best features is the huge Gingerbread House which sits on the dining table in the iconic ballroom scene. There is so much to look at it can be an overload of the senses. Try and ride it at least twice so that you can take everything in.

Disneyland at Christmas time is one of the best seasons to visit. Holidays at Disneyland started on Nov. 12 and run through Jan. 6, 2013.

Extra Magic Hour for Disneyland Hotel Resort Guests

There are many reasons to stay in a Disneyland Resort Hotel and one of the very best is that you get to spend an extra hour in the parks in the morning before they open to the general public!

Guests staying at a Disneyland Resort Hotel have an Extra Magic Hour — early entry to either Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure Park every day of their stay. You need to show your room key and valid theme park ticket for entry.

Extra Magic Hour will allow registered Disneyland Resort Hotel Guests admission into select attractions at Disneyland Park on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Guests will have early entry to Disney California Adventure Park on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, before that Park opens to the general public.

The Extra Magic Hour at Disneyland is a huge perk – particularly for Disney California Adventure Park right now. On our recent visit we managed to ride Radiator Springs Racers 3 times in a row in the early morning. As soon as the park opened to non Disney resort hotel guests the line went up to at least 60 minutes after opening time. Later in the day that line was 120 minutes!

Disneyland Star Tours Review

The long wait is over and Star Tours The Adventure Continues is now open in Disneyland. This weekend my family and I braved the considerable crowds but were fortunate enough to have Fast Passes for the brand new version of this classic Disney ride. Star Tours is now back on my list of Top 5 favorite Disney rides. I decided to leave the actual review to someone who knows way more about Star Wars than I. My husband Richard! So here is what he thought of the new ride:

I finally got to try out the new Star Tours – the Adventures Continue – at Disneyland this weekend. It’s advertised as all-new, with brand new 3D sequences and 54 different versions of the ride. I went on the ride twice, quite a feat considering the wait times, but was dismayed to find I was sitting through exactly the same story! What are the chances of that? (OK, smart people might say 1 in 54, but I’m guessing it’s even less than that. Read on for why…)

First things first. Spoiler alert coming. I should say now that this post includes details of one of the 54 new stories, plus observations from the brand new waiting line, so if you don’t want to know, stop reading now.

OK, I was exaggerating slightly, since there was a slight difference between the two rides. In the first story, Yoda delivers information about a spy who has hidden on board the ship. In the second, this is done by a holographic projection of Princess Leia. Very impressive, since for the show they re-used the message hidden inside R2-D2 by the Princess shortly before the Tantive IV was captured in A New Hope. There may have been lip-syncing going on, but it was hard to see. The script was definitely adjusted to make use of the original, especially ‘you are our only hope’. The spy turned out to be one of our fellow passengers, and a photo of them was shown on a video screen at the side of the main screen.

I absolutely loved the ride, particularly the use of C3PO as the rookie pilot caught in the auto-launch sequence. My son told me there must be five C3POs in the ride in total (one in the line and one on each of the four shuttle ships. Not bad for a five year old).

As you attempt to take off from the space port, Darth Vader, flanked by a battalion of storm troopers (some with jet packs) attempts to intercept you. He uses his dark force powers to throw the ship around in new ways. This must have stretched the simulator’s capabilities far more than originally expected.

You are then pursued by a group of 3D TIE fighters as you try to head into hyperspace.

The jump to lightspeed felt a lot more realistic in the new simulator. Of course I haven’t really got anything to compare this against (the California speed limit forces me to keep my car under 65 mph at all times).

On exiting lightspeed, you end up joining the Battle of Hoth where several AT-ATs either step on you or collapse on you after a snowspeeder succeeds in lassoing their legs.

After the next lightspeed jump you arrive in the rings around the planet Geonosis, where Jango Fett is waiting to give chase in Slave I through the asteroids that make up the rings. You weave through the asteroid field with some great effects, courtesy of the Star Tours the simulator. Actually since this story is supposed to be set around Episodes II and III I wonder if this is actually a grown-up Boba? Also, since he appears to fall foul of one of his own seismic charges, is this consistent with the story? Sorry, maybe I’m taking this too seriously now…

The final exciting sequence takes you into the Death Star, which is under construction. You enter through an open hole in the side and speed through tight corridors, just like those in Return of the Jedi, before plummeting down a huge shaft filled with ships. One of these ships is the Millenium Falcon, but it speeds past in an instant and is hard to spot (my son saw it too).

A new and entertaining wait line slightly makes up for the wait time (120 minutes yesterday for anyone without a Fastpass). The line shows the weather on various destination planets including Mustafar (ash cloud approaching, of course). I didn’t spot Hoth on there but guessed it was going to be cold.

I also loved the silhouetted shadows passing by the window in the line and spotted a number of familiar shapes: Chancellor Palpatine (again since this is set around Episodes 2 and 3 I assume he hasn’t made emperor yet), several Jedi, plus an R2 droid. R2 gets zapped by a bunch of pesky jawas, falls over and is carried off, Episode IV-style.

I was left wondering how they will rotate the different endings. Maybe they are truly random, in which case the probability of my seeing the same show twice was indeed 1 in 54. Or maybe they limit the variation a bit. If it was my ride, I’d hold back some special endings for really special occasions.

The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure

The latest attraction at Disney’s Californian Adventure park tells the story of everyone’s favorite Little Mermaid. Ariel’s Undersea Adventure debuted on 2nd June 2011 and has already proved to be very popular with park guests.

Ariel and her friends are to be found in the Paradise Pier area of the park where the Golden Dreams attraction used to be. The line is in the shade and moves pretty quickly – which is fortunate as there is not much to entertain you whilst waiting. Although one very welcome feature of the line is the soundtrack which was created using the original songs from the movie but creating a whole new orchestral medley.

As you approach the ride boarding area you will see the beautiful 86 foot long hand painted mural designed by Larry Nikolai with scenes from the Little Mermaid movie.

Each guest boards a brightly colored clam shell and takes a 5 1/2 minute journey under the sea with Ariel. There are almost 200 audio animatronic figures included in the ride. Each new attraction has it’s own particular challenges and Ariels ride was no exception. Working out how Ariels hair should move was a particular problem. Another challenge was the fact Ariel, King Triton and Ursula have so much skin exposed a new skin technology needed to be introduced for them.

Your clam shell moves through different scenes which all tell the Little Mermaid story. The most spectacular of these is the Under The Sea scene which features 120 animatronic figures. Look out and see what you think of Ariel’s hair in this scene – it certainly seems to have a strange life of it’s own!

Most of the ride follows the storyline of the movie but the ending scene was created just for The Little Mermaid attraction.

Ariel’s Undersea Adventure is a welcome addition to Disney’s California Adventure but I have to confess being slightly disappointed. Everything is very well done but it just didn’t seem to take anything to a new level. We expect so much from Disney and usually they over perform. The other new attraction Star Tours The Adventure Continues is amazing and takes the experience to a whole new level. With Star Tours you are part of the experience. In Ariel you just never seem to really be very involved. With the exception of the Under The Sea scene there just isn’t quite enough to immerse you in the whole underwater journey. Perhaps we just want too much these days, but Ariel’s Undersea Adventure somehow left me wanting more.

Darth Vader Goes To Disneyland

Have you ever wondered what would happen if a Sith Lord visited Disneyland? Well now you can see as Darth Vader visited Disneyland this week.
