The Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge Boma Restaurant is one of the best buffet options in Walt Disney World. It is a little of the beaten track as it is located in the Animal Kingdom Lodge Hotel, but it is very well worth a visit. Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of our very favorite Disney World Hotels and we always visit Boma when we are there.

Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge Boma

Boma has become famous for its very popular Zebra Dome desserts. If you want to make these at home be sure to visit our article about how to make them:

Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge Boma Atmosphere and Decor

Boma Restaurant

The Animal Kingdom Lodge is always worth a visit, even though you aren’t staying there. It has a very unique atmosphere. As soon as you walk into the lobby of Animal Kingdom Lodge you know that you are somewhere very special.

Waiting at Boma's

The Boma restaurant is located downstairs from the lobby. There is a waiting area with a small amount of seating. It is right opposite the other excellent Disney Animal Kindgom Jambo House restaurant, Jiko. If you know that you have a long wait ahead of you then you should go out and look at the savannahs and see how many animals you can catch sight of before your meal at Boma.

It used to be that it was incredibly easy to get a reservation or even a walk in at Boma, but in recent years the secret is well and truly out. So Advance Dining Reservations are always recommended. It is one of the few Disney restaurants where you still may get lucky with a walk in though so it is always worth trying to get a last-minute reservation before you drive out to the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

AKL Boma 1

The atmosphere at Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge Boma is one of low lighting and a relaxed atmosphere. It’ just not as loud as other Disney World buffet restaurants. It may be that this is because this is not a character dining buffet, but we think it also has something to do with the very tranquil overall feeling of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

BOMA ceiling detail

The dining room itself is beautifully decorated, with all the attention to detail which you come to expect from Disney World restaurants. There is a lot of use of dark woods. Look up and you will see the decorated ceiling. You feel as though you are in Africa, with thatched roofs and beautiful lanterns. It is designed to make you feel that you are in an African village.

Boma Restaurant Breakfast

Breakfast is served each day at Boma from 7.30 am until 10 am. The food is buffet style, but note that you will not find Mickey Mouse here. This is not a character breakfast. Boma operates seasonal pricing. This means that the price of an adult meal will range from $24.23 to $29.49 and a child meal (for children aged 3 to 9) ranges from $13.71 to $19.84 . These prices are correct as at February 2017. They include tax but they do not include gratuity.

You will find your usual breakfast favorites at Boma. If you want to enjoy cereal, create your own omelet, sausage, bacon, pancakes, waffles and oatmeal this is the place for you. There is a Kid’s Buffet, but surprisingly you will not find Mickey Waffles or Pancakes here. If you want them with M & M’s though you are in luck at Boma.

However, if you want to try something different, this is where it gets interesting. You really should explore some interesting flavors whilst you are here.

Boma Elephant

Instead of the usual scrambled eggs, why not try something a bit different? The Goats Cheese and Spinach Scrambled Egg is divine.

The yogurt bar is there for you if you want to make some healthy choices. There is always an excellent choice of fruit. There is usually one salad available for breakfast too if you want to sample that early in the morning. Boma is probably one of the few buffets where you will find grilled asparagus for breakfast.

The African Spiced Corn Beef Hash is well worth a try. You can even have Roasted Turkey or Ham from the carving station. The interesting thing about Boma is the different sauces that they offer. The Boma Mustard is definitely worth trying.

If you have room, and let’s face it, you will force yourself even if you don’t, you should try the very amazing French Toast Bread Pudding with Pecan Praline Sauce.

You must always try the Jungle Juice at Boma.It is a delicious tropical fruit mix and you will keep asking for refills. You can also get this at the Tusker House Restaurant at Animal Kingdom Park. Soft drinks and tea and coffee are included in the buffet breakfast price. If you are a coffee lover you may want to try the Coffee Press – but this is charged as extra. The coffee here is standard Disney buffet breakfast fare. If you are a coffee lover you may want to go for the Press and pay the extra charge.

Boma Restaurant Dinner

Condiments at Carving Station

We like breakfast at Boma, but we love dinner. You can be as conventional or as experimental as you want. The description is that is a buffet with African influences, and we enjoy exploring the different flavors. However Boma will delight all members of your party – from the conventional diners to the more experimental.

Dinner at Boma is served from 4.30 pm until 9.30 pm. The adult price ranges from $41.33 to $47.59, and the child price is $21.10 to $26.29. Tax is included, but gratuity is not. A non-alcoholic beverage is included in these prices.

There are also a very large range of African wines to choose from – in fact it is the largest selection in any restaurant you will find outside of Africa. So there is plenty to choose from. There are reasonably priced wine flights available so that you can sample a variety of African wines.

The first buffet station that we head to at Boma is always the Hummus Station. It is difficult to choose which one is the best – the
White Bean, Black Olive, or the Sun-Dried Tomato Hummus. If we really had to decide, it would be the Sun-Dried Tomato Humus. It is served with Lavosh Bread. It’s quite difficult not to overeat on this part, but you have to remember that there is so much more to choose from!

Salads 1

The Salad Station is always our next stop. There are some very interesting flavors here. We particularly like the Papaya, Avocado, and Grapefruit Salad. The Watermelon and Tomato Salad is also a good combination of flavors which we would never have thought to put together.

Chicken Pepper Pot Soup

Next stop is the Soup Station. There is always plenty of selection, but we have our definite favorites. We are always very thankful when the Curried Coconut Seafood Soup is there, and the Spicy Nigerian Peanut Soup is also a favorite. The Butternut Squash Soup and the Carrot Ginger Soup are always good too.

We always try and pace ourselves and make sure that we have more than enough room for the entree dishes. Again, these vary each night, but you will always find something that you want to try.

There is a carving station which has Roasted Turkey, Beef, Pork Shoulder and African-Spiced Strip Loin. There are usually a couple of meat choices on the carving station and a salmon too. Where it gets really interesting is in the Sauces and Side Dishes that they offer. One thing that we always have to have is the Peanut Rice. We also always have to have the Fufu which is a combination of white and sweet potatoes.

There are so many dishes that we love at Boma it is difficult to know where to start. The Salmon with Orange-Almond Rice doesn’t seem to be there that often, but we love it when it is. The Beef and Lamb Bobotie is always worth a try. If you enjoy pork you will probably love the Ancho Barbecue Pork Ribs. Really the only difficult thing at Boma is not trying to many things! This is why you will always want to return, so that you can sample more of the amazing dishes that they have to offer.

Boma Desserts

PB053677

The most well know of these is the Zebra Dome Desserts. You absolutely must try these – they are delicious. They are so popular they have almost achieved cult status with those in the know. They are loaded with Amarula liqueur and when you have one you really have to have another. Boma is the only place that you can find Zebra Domes except the quick service location at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, the Mara. You have to sample one if you get the chance.

The Passion Fruit Panna Cotta with Apricot Gelee is another favorite. You can kind of delude yourself into thinking that these don’t have many calories.

The final thing which we usually have, when we have already consumed way too much is the Banana and Butterscotch Pudding. If you pair this with the excellent Vanilla Sauce you will be very happy.

The Kid’s Buffet at Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge Boma

Boma Plate #5

You could be feeling that although you want to try Boma because you are intersted in the different flavors and dishes, there is no way your kids are going to go for this experience. Of course, Disney has already thought of this. There are plenty of options for adults who don’t want to explore much, and there are certainly choices for picky eater kids.

On the Boma Kid’s Buffet you will find the usual favorites of Mac and Cheese, Penne Pasta, Meatballs and Mashed Potato. The grown ups are more than welcome to have anything from the Kid’s Buffet too (we confess to sometimes eating the Mashed Potato because it is really really good).

Special Diets at Boma

disneybomavegan

All Disney restaurants are very good at catering for special dietary requirements. We have covered most of them on our Disney travels – gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan. There is no where else we feel more comfortable that our dietary needs will be listened to than Disney. If you tell your server that you have a special dietary request the chef will come out and talk to you. One of the best places for this at Disney is Boma. They really want to make something creative for you.

The delicious dessert shown in the picture is vegan. Unfortunately the famous Zebra Domes are not even vegetarian, but my vegan daughter remembers how great they are. She requested a dessert which was as close as they could get to the famous dessert and this is what they created for her. Delicious and very much appreciated as it is in the dessert part of the meal that vegans are often left out.

There are plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free selections available at the Boma buffet. The chef will take you around and show you what is safe for you to eat.

Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge Boma Summary

If you get the chance you really have to try Boma when you are at Disney World. It is an experience that you won’t forget.
