Just as there are ways to save when booking there are also ways to save once you are actually on the Disney cruise.

Your Key To The World is also your key to the cashless world on Disney ships. But with that convenience sometimes comes the overwhelming temptation to spend more than you thought you were spending.

However, there is a way to avoid overspend. Here are our top hacks and tips to saving you from sticker shock when you get your final account on board!

Book Your Own Excursions

The big advantage of booking with Disney cruise lines for your ship excursions is that you are absolutely guaranteed that if you are late back off the excursion the ship will not leave without you. We know this is a big one for most guests, including us. We have mostly booked Port Adventures with Disney for this reason. However many guests book independently. Sometimes with exactly the same tour operators that Disney uses, and there are big savings to be made.

Wait For The Spa Discounts

You can book spa treatments in advance before you get onboard your Disney cruise. But if you can be flexible in what you want. If you aren’t getting off the ship on a port day, you can make considerable savings. Spa specials are usually advertised for port days

Disconnect From Reality

Do you really need to be connected to the internet?

One of the things I enjoy about Disney cruises is not having 24/7 access to the internet. It is available on all the Disney ships of course and I do still need to keep in touch with certain things but I would rather buy the medium internet package because then at least I am not tempted to idly browse the internet.

It is really tempting once you get on board a Disney ship to just think that you will buy the biggest internet package which is $89 for 1,000 MB. On my recent cruise I purchased the $39 package which gives you 300 MB and it was fine.

If you really can’t live without the internet then it is usually very easy to find free internet at the ports. Ask your friendly crew members – they will definitely know where they are as if they are off the ship on a port stop that is probably where they are heading first.

Take Your Own Wine

The days are gone when Disney said you could take as much alcohol on board the ship as you wanted. But you can still take limited supplies of alcohol on a Disney ship.

Disney Cruise Line Guests 21 years and older may bring a maximum of 2 bottles of unopened wine or champagne (no larger than 750 ml) or 6 beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board at the beginning of the voyage and at each port-of-call.

Even with the new Disney cruise alcohol, policy savings can be made.

Remember to pack all alcohol in your carry on luggage.

Any found in packed luggage, and yes they do check, will be held for you until you disembark.

For a full explanation of the policy, you can see our guide at:

Enjoy The Free Drinks on a Disney Cruise

Soda, coffee and tea are free from the pool deck dispensers and in the restaurants. If you order a coke from a bar you will be charged for it. The simple answer? Just don’t order it from the bar!

Specialty coffee is also available for a fee. If you really must have your latte then make sure that you pick up a coffee card which will give you a buy 5 get 1 free deal.

Do Your Own Laundry

I know we want to escape reality on a cruise but sometimes you need to tackle the issue of laundry.

There is a service on board all the Disney ships where all you need to do is put your laundry in the bag and leave it for the ships magical laundry service.

Convenience comes at a price. A huge price. Just be aware that it costs $1 to wash a pair of socks and this may have you heading to find the self-service laundry rooms.

There are plenty of self-service laundry rooms on board and they charge $2 for a wash and $2 for a dryer. Try and pick non-peak times, so not the final sea day of the cruise, to do your laundry.

Also bringing your own laundry pods and dryer sheets will help you save you money. See our guide What To Pack For A Disney Cruise for more tips of things to bring on board.

Don’t Give The Kids Charging Privileges On Your Key To The World

Your Key To The World is the magic card that will open the door to your room, It also acts as your charge card. Unless you know that your kids aren’t going to go on a spending spree then don’t give them the temptation of charging privileges.

It is a good idea to set a budget for souvenirs to buy on board and in the ports. There are many tempting things in the Disney cruise ship stores, many of which you can’t buy elsewhere. If you are wanting to limit spending, set a budget.

Take A Water Bottle

Disney is not a hard sell cruise line but you will notice as your board that you will be asked if you want to buy a water (or wine) package. The water on board is safe to drink and it is easy to get iced water from the pool deck machine. We always take water bottles, preferably with a spray feature, to keep cool. You may like

Avoid The Concession Stand

There is enough free food on a Disney cruise to ensure that you will not be hungry. But there are a few temptations to lure you into buying even more.

On your way to the Walt Disney Theater, you will have to walk past a concession stand selling popcorn and drinks. We know that you will probably be tempted by the Olaf plastic popcorn bucket.

However, if you give in every day to the smell of the popcorn you will put a dent in your account.
