Disney Pixar Brave Wins Best Animated Feature Oscar

A well deserved win for Disney Pixar’s Brave movie of the Best Animated Feature at the Oscar awards last night. Some felt it was not the favorite to win against fellow Disney movie nominees Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie and Disney’s Wreck it Ralph films. The two other Oscar nominees were Laika/Focus Features’ “ParaNorman” and Sony’s “The Pirates! Band of Misfits.”

But Princess Merida triumphed over all and took home the golden statue. Well perhaps not Merida herself but co directors Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman on her behalf.

If you haven’t yet seen this Pixar movie it is now available on DVD at:

Brave (Three-Disc Collector’s Edition: Blu-ray / DVD)

Pixar has an amazing history of wins at the Oscar Ceremony over the years. The win for Brave gave Pixar it’s 27th Oscar. A remarkable achievement for a relatively young studio, and even more remarkable when you consider that in the last six years it has won the Best Animated Feature Academy Award five times. Finding Nemo” (2003), “The Incredibles” (2004), “Ratatouille” (2007), “Wall-E” (2008), “Up” (2009) and “Toy Story 3″ (2010) have all won the Best Animated Feature Oscar for Pixar.

It was a great night for Disney at the 2013 Oscars as they also picked up the award for Best Animated Short for the movie Paperman. The producer of Paperman Kristina Reed was escorted out of her seat by security for reportedly throwing paper planes, like the ones in the movie. Security at the event were not entertained, even though the planes had kisses on the , just as they do in the movie! It seems that they relented though and she was back in her seat within 10 minutes.

Paperman is a black and white animated movie which tells the story of a man who tries to attract the attention of a woman by flying paper airplanes. It is a beautiful story which was originally shown in theaters with Wreck it Ralph. If you want to see this delightful movie you can get this as a bonus to Wreck-It Ralph (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Merida Arrives in Magic Kingdom

With the imminent release of the new Disney Pixar movie Brave in June we will be seeing a lot more of Princess Merida. After the poor box office performance of John Carter Disney must wishing for a lot more success with Brave. It has been accounted that guests at Disney World will have the chance to meet Princess Merida in the Fairytale Garden in Magic Kingdom.

Merida will have her own meet and greet with a new Scottish Highlands themed landscape. We are told that there will be archery lessons involved so it will certainly be interesting to see how that will work out.

Rapunzel is having to move to the Adventureland Veranda to make way for Merida. She will be moving from Fairytale Garden so that Merida can take over her spot. Rapunzel will move on 15th April but she will have to wait a little while for Flyn Ryder to join her in the summer. Also in the Veranda location will be Ariel and Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid.

The Disney Princesses continue to be a dominating and very popular force in the Magic Kingdom with more and more space being given over to meet and greet opportunities.

It will be very interesting to see how the Princess Merida character and indeed the Brave movie is received. Brave is very much a departure for Pixar as it is the first fairy tale type story that it has used and also the first Princess figure. We can see how much the general public love the Disney Princesses so in theory they really should take to Merida. She is very much a Princess for the 21st century as she defies her family and royal traditions to make her own way in the world. Unfortunately in this defiance she creates chaos and it is her responsibility to make things right. She is a strong role model for girls and is part of the new Disney Princess generation. No longer does the female lead have to wait for her Prince to save her.

Disney Pixar’s Brave is due to be released on June 22nd. If you want to see more about the upcoming movie in Disney World then head on over to Hollywood Studios where there is an excellent display of photos and models in The Art of Animation attraction area.
