Samantha Brown Disney Dream Video

Travel Channels Samantha Brown was one of the first guests to sail aboard the Disney Dream. Disney Parks has just released the first of a series of videos which she made for them whilst about the Disney Dream Christening voyage.

Here Samantha highlights the innovative technology aboard the Disney Dream including Animator’s Palate, the AquaDuck and the Virtual Portholes. These are cruise industry firsts which no doubt will be taken on board by other cruise lines. The inside staterooms are selling fast on all Disney Dream sailings so if you want to see the Virtual Portholes for yourself then you had better hurry!

Disney Cruise For Adults

We all know that the kids are going to be happy but what does a Disney Cruise offer for adults? Whether you are adults traveling with children or sailing with just grown ups a Disney cruise really can be a dream vacation.

So what does a Disney Cruise offer for the adults?

Quiet Cove Pool

We all have times when we just want to spend some kid free time. The Disney Wonder, Magic and Dream all have an adult only area which centers around the Quiet Cove pool. The pool is open to the over 18s only. On the Disney Magic and Wonder the pool is a maximum of 4 feet deep, heated to a very nice temperature all day, and has 2 jacuzzis. A nice feature of the jacuzzis is that they are shaded. The pool deck has plenty of upgraded sun loungers, and of course the Signals bar is right next to the pool.

The design of the pool on the Disney Dream goes even further in luxury by offering a 6 inch deep pool which has sun loungers and misters so that you can cool off and sunbathe. Needless to say this is a popular spot on the ship.

For those who want a quiet relaxing place to sit and enjoy a cocktail, glass of wine, or a coffee, then the Cove Cafe is a place just for the adults too.

Many cruise lines say that they have adult only spaces but I have to say that some I have experienced do not particularly enforce this and you will often find that children find their way into the adult ‘sanctuary’. This is not my experience of Disney ships. The rules just seem to be adhered to and, save for the occasional child passing through it is rare to see the under 18s in any adult reserved areas on a Disney ship. Perhaps it is because there are so many spaces for kids why on earth would they want to enter the places where the ‘boring’ grown ups are!

Palo

Palo is the fine dining adult only restaurant on the Disney Wonder, Magic and Dream cruise ships. You really do need to experience this at least once on your cruise.

On the Disney Wonder and Magic, Palo is located on Deck 11 and seats 130 guests in a beautifully designed restaurant with an Italian theme. Guests can book brunch, high tea and dinner. There is an additional charge of $20 per person for brunch and dinner, $10 for high tea.

If you only visit Palo once then I would recommend the brunch. An amazing selection of buffet and menu items. There is an excellent seafood selection, anti pasti, cheeses and hot food items. You will find it difficult not to sample at least one of the desserts! Brunch is offered on sea days of sailings 4 nights and longer.

Palo is also offered on Disney Dream but for this ship your options are even more plentiful for adult dining. If you want to enjoy the finest most exclusive dining aboard the Disney Dream then book a table at Remy. Named after the lovable rat chef on Disney Pixar Ratatouille this is fine dining at it’s best. The menu is French inspired and has a surcharge of $75 per person not including wine.

Vista Spa and Salon

Another area for the over 18s only is the Vista Spa, Salon and fitness area. Offering the usual range of spa and salon services as well as the Rainforest. If you are looking for the ultimate in relaxation then a visit here is a must.

The fitness area on the Disney Wonder and Magic is smaller than on many cruise ships of similar size, but it has a good range of equipment. Classes are also offered each day. The fitness center is open to the over 18s over. I did discuss this with a Cast Member as I have an aspiring ballerina daughter aged 13. She needs to maintain a high level of fitness and access to the gym was very important. The Cast Member kindly said that she could access the area from 8pm to 10pm.

Lounges and Bars

On all of the Disney ships you will find a number of bars and lounges to enjoy. Some are family friendly but a number are adult only, particularly past a certain hour of the day.

Don’t sail on a Disney cruise expecting a wild night life. That is simply not what Disney is about! But there are many places to enjoy a drink, sit back and relax and listen to live music.

A whole area of each ship is devoted to nightclubs. This is called Route 66 on the Wonder and the Magic. The Disney Dream has The District.

Activities for Grown Ups

Disney ships always have a strong and varied program of activities for the over 18s only. There is the traditional wine tasting of course as well as the particularly enjoyable The Art of Entertaining talks where a chef shows you how to prepare a dish featured in one the Disney restaurants.

The Disney Behind the Scenes talks are particularly informative and enjoyable. On my recent Disney Wonder cruise I particularly enjoyed the presentations by Leslie Iwerks, the grand daughter of Walt Disney’s business partner, exceptional animator and the acknowledged creator of MIckey Mouse.

Activities for All Ages

As well as all of the over 18s only areas and activities there are so many things on the ship which adults will enjoy. Disney has the best stage shows at sea. They are so superior you really will struggle to watch most others when you have experienced Disney.

If you are a movie fan then you will find something to watch in the Buena Vista Theater. Disney shows it’s movies all day and evening, and often shows new release and even premiers it’s own movies onboard.

The dining experience, whilst I know it doesn’t have the best food at sea, certainly has some of the very best service and interesting restaurant design you will encounter anywhere. No other restaurants I know change whilst you eat……

What About a Disney Cruise with No Kids?

Is a Disney cruise a good alternative for guests who do not have children coming along with them? Disney is very much known as a family cruise line but it has a huge amount to offer adults traveling without children too. the quality of the Disney cruise ships, the excellently designed staterooms, the itineraries, the entertainment shows which are the best at sea, the dining – all of this means that if you are looking for a high quality cruise experience then you should certainly look at Disney.

A word of warning though. In my view it is possible to go on a Disney cruise is you do not particularly know anything about or even particularly enjoy Disney.

You can walk around the ship and forget sometimes that the whole environment is built around the Disney theme. Yes really. Mickey Mouse is not going to approach you unless you approach him! But really a lot of the magic is because it is what it is. Disney. So if you actively dislike the Mouse (apparently there are such people) then of course this really isn’t for you. But if you are a Disney fan, or even curious to know what all the fuss is about, then this could be the ideal cruise experience for you.

Disney World and Disney Cruise Packages

Many guests want to consider a Disney World and Disney Cruise Package but does it really save time and money? Combining a Walt Disney World vacation and a Disney cruise is certainly a great idea but whether or not you should book it as a whole package will for many guests depend upon whether it is a better deal or not. Are there really any savings?

Disney does make everything very easy for you if you book a package. The Disney Magical Express will pick you up from the airport and transport you to your Disney resort or cruise port without ever having to worry about your luggage. All domestic air passengers can skip baggage claim and just go directly to the Disney Magical Welcome Center at Orlando International. Disney will deal with their luggage for them and it will magically appear either in their resort hotel room or their cruise stateroom.

The Disney Magical Express from the airport to the Disney resort is complimentary but there is a charge for the ride to Port Canaveral. It is an incredibly efficient and easy way to deal with the transfer – Disney really does take care of everything for you without the need to arrange outside transportation or rent a car.

You can book a stay at a Walt Disney World hotel resort either before and/or after your cruise. Airfare can also be included in the package. Walt Disney World tickets and dining can also be included.

Guests have a choice of any of the available Walt Disney World hotels no matter which category of Disney cruise stateroom they have booked.

But does booking a Disney World and Disney cruise package together actually save you any money? Experience tells me that often it is not the case. Sometimes it is better to book the Disney World part separately from the Disney cruise as it may be cheaper to do it that way. Also the choice of rooms may be limited in the package. I recently tried to book a savannah view room in Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge for one of my guests and was not able to guarantee that as part of a package. The solution, rather than go on the wait list that Disney suggested was to book a savannah view separately.

Unfortunately there is not a one size fits all answer as it depends upon dates, current offers, hotel availability, and the alignment of the moon. So I was kidding about the last one but really there isn’t an easy answer. If you want to save yourself the time and stress of working this all out then the best way is to ask a Disney Authorized Travel Agent to work through a price comparison. Their services are completely free and without obligation.

Surprisingly Disney does not offer any Disneyland and Disney cruise packages even though the Disney Wonder now sails out of Los Angeles. This would be a welcome addition for many guests wanting to combine a cruise with a Disneyland vacation.

Disney Cruise Kids Choose Activities

One of the great features of the Disney Cruise line youth activities is that children can customize their own experience. Disney cruises are unique in that they let children have a great degree of choice over what activities they want to do, and do not split them into restricted age groups as most other cruise lines do.

Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab are open to children age 3 to 12 on the Disney Wonder and age 3 to 10 on the Disney Magic and Disney Dream.

Disney allows kids to choose the activities which interest them the most. The Disney Kids Counsellors will guide and recommend activities for certain ages groups, but it is up to the individual child and their parents to decide which to participate in. This means that children can join in activities with friends and family regardless of age. As a parent of a child who just plain refused to go into a kids club on another cruise line because he couldn’t be with his brother, the Disney approach just makes perfect sense to me.

As you would expect from Disney the quality and choice of activities is exceptional. This is the happiest place at sea! Kids can choose from over 100 activities including Toy Story Boot Camp, Cinderella’s Royal Ball, So You Want to be a Pirate, Ratatouille Cooking School, and the Piston Cup Challenge.

Another great feature of the Youth Activities onboard a Disney Cruise is the Dine and Play feature. Families can enjoy dinner together at the second seating and then check any children aged 3 to 12 into the Youth Activities in the dining room, rather than having to check them in at the Oceaneer’s Clubs. The grown ups can enjoy some time together knowing that the kids are happy and well cared for. The most difficult thing may be getting your kids to leave the Oceaneer’s Clubs!

A Disney Cruise is a wonderful experience at any time of year but during the Holidays it is particularly magical. There are special decorations, dining and entertainment.

Traditionally the sailings over the Holidays had been 8 nights and upwards so it is good to see the option of some shorter cruises – not everyone wants to or can afford the time to sail for a long time over the Holidays. So the Disney Dream Holiday cruises are highly likely to be very sought after. Book as early as you can to make sure you get the best choice of staterooms and prices.

Disney Dream Cruise Entertainment

Disney cruises are always known for their spectacular stage shows and of course the Dream has some magical shows onboard including a guest favorite Golden Mickey’s: A Timeless Tribute. The popular Villains Tonight (which premiered on Disney Magic in 2010) and the all new Believe will feature in the 1340 seat Walt Disney Theater on the Disney Dream.

It is great to see that the Disney Dream will show Golden Mickey’s. The show has been re-imagined with the addition of more songs including one from Disney’s new movie Tangled. Interesting that they did not pick Toy Story The Musical instead of Villains Tonight as for many this has to be the stronger show.

The Disney Dream will also feature a re-imagined Pirates evening to enhance the entertainment options available for all ages. The experience has been part of the Disney cruise experience since 2004 and has always been one of the highlights.

For the younger children the evening starts with Mickey’s Pirates in the Caribbean. For the older children and adults Captain Jack Sparrow will appear in the Club Pirate part of the experience. And of course the evening will end to a new spectacular fireworks at sea display Buccaneer Blast.

Disney Dream Cruise For Adults

Is the Disney Dream cruise ship really a great choice for the grown ups? When most people think of a Disney Dream cruise they think of what the kids will enjoy. Whilst Disney is a magical cruise for families they have also created an amazing vacation for adults traveling with or without the children. So just what is available for adults on the Disney Dream cruise ship?

Quite Cove Pool

Disney realizes sometimes you just want some quiet time by the pool. Without the kids. So they designed the Quiet Cove Pool which is reserved just for adults over the age of 18. This freshwater pool has an interesting curved design and is located Forward on Deck 11 of the Disney Dream. The depth of the water varies and includes a sunbathing area which is 6 inches deep and includes built in loungers and a mister. Perfect for relaxing.

What more could you ask for than a cool drink whilst relaxing around the pool. Of course there is a cocktail bar at the pool side. Guests can enjoy a drink from the Cove Bar without ever having to leave the luxury of the pool as the bar staff will of course bring your drink to you.

For the ultimate in relaxation book a poolside massage. Or enjoy the fabulous views out to sea from the Quiet Cove Spa.

Disney Dream Dining for Adults

Disney Cruise line has long since realized that adults want a dining space just for the adults. This is why they created Palo, the highly successful no kids allowed restaurant on the Disney Wonder and Disney Magic.

The Disney Dream will also have a Palo restaurant. This adult only exclusive restaurant is located on Deck 12 Aft of the ship. It’s theme is Northern Italian cuisine. Ever wondered why the name Palo? It is named after the long poles used by the Venetian gondaliers.

Palo will serve Dinner and Brunch for an additional cover charge of $20 per person. You do have to book in advance and it is wise to plan as far ahead as you can. First time Disney cruisers can book up to 75 days in advance whilst Castaway Cay Club members can reserve Palo between 90 and 120 days in advance depending on which Club level status they have. Concierge guests can also book 120 days in advance.

The Disney Dream adds a new premium dining experience. The new Remy restaurant is of course named after our favorite gourmet rat in Ratatouille.
Remy will serve dinner only and there is a cover charge of $75 per person. the beautiful Art Nouveau styled restaurant features the finest French cuisine. There is even a private Chef’s Table for an even more exclusive dining experience. Guests are greeted with a Champagne Cocktail (all other alcoholic beverages are at extra charge.

Remy is sure to become one of the most popular Disney dining experiences and guests will need to book ahead. Again the Concierge Guests and Castaway Cay Members are allowed to book first.

Disney Dream Spa

If you are seeking relaxation and pampering in luxurious surroundings then you will want to head to the spa. All of the usual spa and salon treatments are available including massage, facials, manicures and hairstyling. You can even have your teeth whitened so you can feel more like a Disney Princess (or Prince of course).

Experience pure tranquility, indulgent pampering and inner contentment in an environment designed to soothe the senses. Guests’ bodies and spirits are nurtured in the spa’s 17 private treatment rooms. Spa services (except the villa treatments) can be booked prior to boarding using your Cruise Personalizer.

For the ultimate in pampering you can reserve one of the Senses Spa Villas. Each villa is a private suite with it’s own balcony with a hot tub. You can book any one of a number of spa treatment packages to enjoy in the comfort of your own villa. Prices start at $449 and can only be booked once onboard.

There is also a large fitness center onboard and all users must be aged 18 or over.

Nightclubs and Lounges

If you want a quite place to relax with a cup of coffee then head to the Cove Cafe which is located next to the Quiet Cove pool on Deck 11 Forward. There is indoor and outdoor seating in this grown ups only cafe.

Evolution is an adult only dance club. The theme was inspired by the evolution of a butterfly and the surroundings are truly beautiful. During the day Evolution will host dance classes and other activities for everyone. In the evening it is for adults only and will offer dancing and karaoke and of course a full bar.

The Meridian bar is located between the Remy and Palo restaurants on Deck 12. The theme is world travel and you will enjoy an amazing view out over the ocean at the back of the ship. You can even sip a cocktail on the luxurious teak deck and admire the view.

Pink is located in The District on Deck 4 of the ship. It is furnished in a sophisticated Art Nouveau style and is the ideal bar for a romantic evening drink.

Skyline is also located in The District. It has huge screens on the wall which change to show skylines of great cities of the world. Each evening the skyline will change and the bar will offer different themed cocktails from the featured country.

So is the DIsney Dream for adults? Disney cruise line has always given an exceptional amount of attention to creating a space which is for families, children and adults to enjoy both together and separately. Perhaps because Disney realized from the very start that their cruise ships were always going to say “family’ loud and clear, they have been particularly successful with actually creating separate spaces for adults to enjoy.

Disney is the master of creating magic. And adults traveling with or without children will certainly find plenty of grown up space to enjoy.

All images used are Walt Disney Imagineer Early Concept Art. Very soon we will be excited to show you the actual pictures as the launch of the Dream is now very close.

Disney Dream Cruise Staterooms

The new Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy cruise ships have a lot of interesting innovations which make it an excellent choice for a family cruise. The Disney Dream staterooms combine space, attention to detail and convenience which is perfect for families. Which stateroom should you choose? This really is very much a matter of personal taste and budget. The best advice is to choose a stateroom to fit comfortably into your budget. Choose the very best stateroom that you feel that you can afford.

The Disney Dream Cruise Ship is all set to be launched in January 2011 and the Disney Fantasy Cruise Ship 2012 itineraries have just been announced. You will want to make sure that you make the very best choice of stateroom on these exciting new Disney ships.

Some guests do feel that as they do not spend much time in their stateroom then it is only necessary to spend the least amount of money on it. Whilst this may work for some people it certainly won’t for others. The right choice of stateroom is really important.

Disney really has been a leader of stateroom design. The staterooms on the Disney Wonder and Magic are up to 25% larger than industry standard. Disney cruise lines was also the first to offer the “split bath” design which has proved so popular with families. The split bath concept allows more than one person to use the bathroom facilities at the same time. The full bathroom includes a vanity, sink and tub/shower, while the half bath has a vanity, sink and toilet. The split bathroom is standard on all Disney cruise staterooms except the Standard Inside Staterooms.

One major innovation which is causing a lot of interest is the Magical Porthole. These will allow those in inside staterooms on the Disney Dream and Fantasy to have a whole new window on the outside world. Disney has outdoor live feed cameras on the exterior of the ship which will project live images onto a porthole screen in the interior staterooms. You can expect some surprises too. Perhaps you will even find Nemo swimming past your stateroom.

Another great feature of the Disney Dream and Fantasy is that they offer a great choice of staterooms for up to 5 guests. As a mother with 3 children I know that on most other cruise lines there really aren’t that many choices for a family of 5 to stay in one stateroom. The choice is usually paying for 2 staterooms or booking a suite. Disney cruise lines is very family oriented and has realized that there is a huge demand for staterooms sleeping up to 5 guests.

So what do the different categories of the staterooms on the Disney Dream offer? All staterooms have as standard a flat screen television, desk, refrigerator and iPod dock.

There are 9 different categories of stateroom on the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy.

Inside Stateroom

This is 169 square feet and sleeps 3 or 4 guests. It has 2 twins beds convertible to a Queen. The stateroom has a single convertible sofa and some have a pull down bunk. The inside staterooms feature the innovative Magic Porthole. There is a separate small living area with desk and television. There is a bathroom with a bath tub and a shower.

These can be found on Decks 2,5,6,7,8.9 and 10.

Deluxe Inside Stateroom

The deluxe staterooms are the same basic design as the inside staterooms but offer quite a bit more space at 204 square feet. They have a Queen bed and a single convertible sofa. Some have an additional pull down bunk to sleep up to 4 guests. There is a separate seating area with flat screen television and refrigerator. There is a large curtain as a privacy screen between the living and sleeping areas. The Deluxe Inside Staterooms have the split bath feature with a tub and shower.

They are located on Decks 5,6,7,8 and 9.

Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom

These sleep 3 or 4 guests and give 204 square feet of space. Essentially they are the same design as the deluxe inside stateroom except of course they have one or two portholes giving a real view of the outside.

Deluxe Oceanview Family Stateroom

These are excellent staterooms for larger families as they offer good value for up to 5 guests. The 241 square feet of space has a Queen bed with single sleeper sofa and a pull down bunk. Some also offer an upper berth pull down bed so that the stateroom can accommodate 5 guests. Another nice touch is that the porthole has a built in seating area. There is a privacy curtain to separate the living and sleeping area. As is standard there is a desk, television and refrigerator. This stateroom features the split bath. This is an excellent option for families needing space for 5.

Deluxe Oceanview Family Staterooms are located on Decks 5,6,7,8 and 9.

Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

These 246 square feet cabins sleep 3 or 4 guests. The square footage includes the Verandah. The wonderful feature of course is the verandah. If your budget will allow you to have a Verandah stateroom then always make that choice – you will not regret it. There is nothing quite like watching the world go by from your own balcony.

There is a Queen bed, a single sleeper sofa and in some a pull down bunk to sleep up to 4.

These are located on Decks 5 – 10

Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

If you want more space then this stateroom offers 299 square feet with a Queen bed, single sleeper and up to 2 extra pull down berths to accommodate up to 5 guests. All of course with a wonderful Verandah.

Located on Decks 6,7,8,9 and 10.

Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

Want some extra luxury? This stateroom has 306 square feet of space and accommodates up to 5 guests. Guests of these staterooms enjoy concierge service and upgraded stateroom amenities. You even have access to exclusive Concierge areas on the ship. The Concierge Lounge is on Deck 12 and includes the concierge guest only exclusive sun deck. One very valuable feature is that you can book onboard activities and services up to 120 days ahead of sailing – so you get the first choice. This is particularly useful for bookings for the exclusive restaurants Palo and Remy.

These staterooms are located on Decks 11 and 12.

Disney Dream Suites

Disney Dream and Fantasy Suites

Concierge One Bedroom Suite

Offering 622 square feet of space and sleeping up to 5 guests. The stateroom has a separate bedroom with queen-size bed, living area with double convertible sofa, single wall pull-down bed in the living room, walk-in closet, whirlpool in the master bathroom, 2 bathrooms with rain shower. Disney Transatlantic Cruise 2011

A Disney Transatlantic Cruise is a great opportunity to spend 14 nights sailing on the Disney Magic in 2011. The Magic repositions from it’s usual home of Port Canaveral Florida to Barcelona in May 2011 ready for her summer of Mediterranean cruises. The Disney Magic then sails back to Port Canaveral in September 2011.

Disney Transatlantic cruises have many attractions – not least of which is that they offer excellent value for money. Transatlantic cruises on DCL also visit Disney’s private island Castaway Cay. This is the port stop which many Disney cruise guests say is their very favorite of all the port of call.

The Disney Magic sets sail out of Port Canaveral on May 11th 2011 with this itinerary:

Saturday Port Canaveral
Sunday Castaway Cay
Monday At Sea
Tuesday At Sea
Wednesday At Sea
Thursday At Sea
Friday At Sea
Saturday At Sea
Sunday Madeira Portugal
Monday At Sea
Tuesday Cadiz Spain
Wednesday Gibraltar
Thursday At Sea
Friday Barcelona
Saturday Barcelona

The Disney Magic has an overnight port stop in Barcelona which allows passengers to spend more time exploring this exciting city. There are of course many days at sea on a Transatlantic Cruise so this is a great opportunity to enjoy all of the entertainment onboard. Disney does a great job of offering different activities and entertainment during these longer cruises so you never need to worry that you will get bored! Disney offers different shows and entertainment on the Transatlantic Cruises so you will find something new as well as the usual favorites like Golden Mickeys. Of course if you want to kick back and relax then there is plenty of opportunity to do that as well!

An 8-Year Old's Paradise at Sea

One thing that anyone thinking about taking a Disney Transatlantic cruise should be aware of though is that it is not always plain sailing! This is an Atlantic crossing we are talking about, and sometimes the seas can be rough and the weather not the best. This of course is entirely the luck of the draw as no one can ever predict the weather but if you are someone who knows they are prone to sea sickness then perhaps you should consider one of the other itineraries instead.

The Disney Magic will sail back from Europe on September 10th 2011.

Saturday Barcelona
Sunday At Sea
Monday Gibraltar, United Kingdom
Tuesday At Sea
Wednesday Madeira, Portugal
Thursday At Sea
Friday At Sea
Saturday At Sea
Sunday At Sea
Monday At Sea
Tuesday San Maarten, Netherland Antilles
Wednesday Tortola, British Virgin Islands
Thursday At Sea
Friday Castaway Cay
Saturday Port Canaveral, Florida

The Disney Transatlantic cruises offer excellent value so if you have at least 14 days to spare in 2011 then this could be an excellent way to while away the time……

Disney Dream Ship Virtual Portholes

One of the many innovations on the new Disney Dream ship launching in January 2011 is the virtual porthole. Often on cruises the inside staterooms offer great value but of course the disadvantage is that you cannot see the ocean passing by or the view of the ports as you approach. Disney cruises has solved this problem in a very innovative way on the Disney Dream – virtual portholes.

Each inside stateroom will have a video screen in the wall which will project images from a live camera feed on the outside of the ship. But this being Disney of course it will be a little more interesting than that! So you can expect to see Disney characters appearing on your virtual window. Kids and adults alike are going to enjoy watching Mickey Mouse, Nemo and many other Disney friends floating past their eyes on their virtual porthole brining a whole new dimension to an inside stateroom. Disney Cruise Line is even reporting that guests are refusing upgrades because they are so keen to see what this new technology offers.
