Oz The Great and Powerful opens in theaters on March 8th 2013. This new movie trailer gives you some idea of just how fabulous the movie looks.

The look of the movie reminds me a lot of Alice in Wonderland (minus Johnny Depp of course). The new movie is directed by Sam Raimi who is perhaps best known for directing The Evil Dead I and II and the first 3 Spiderman movies. The story is of course based on the original story of the Wizard of Oz by Frank Baum.

James Franco plays small time circus magician Oscar Diggs who is thrilled to find himself in the Land of Oz (he hails from Kansas of course). He has a fine time until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams). The witches see through his fake wizardry and doubt that he is he is the great wizard everyone’s in the Land of Oz has been expecting. Much against his will Diggs finds himself involved in the problems which Oz is facing.

Oz the Great and Powerful reportedly had a budget of $200 million. Whenever Disney produces a movie with a budget that large everyone seems to mention the John Carter movie which reputedly cost $250 million to make and swallowed up a further $100 million in marketing costs. Budgets like this make anything less than a runaway success seem like a flop. Will Oz The Great and Powerful be more of an Alice in Wonderland or a John Carter? Unfortunately no one, not even Disney, has a crystal ball or magical powers to really see what the public reaction to a movie will be. But we will soon see it Oz The Great and Powerful will be a success – it opens on March 8th 2013.
