Disney Cruise Alaska Dog Sledding
So what are the choices for dog sledding excursions on a Disney Alaska cruise?
Disney Cruise Alaska Dog Sledding in Juneau
One of the most comprehensive tours is the Disney Exclusive Glacier Dog Musher for a Day (JU31). At a wallet destroying price of $999 for adults and $999 for children aged 5 to 9, you better be sure that this is the excursion of a lifetime! The minimum age is 5 years old for kids, and the experience lasts from 4 to 4 hours 30 minutes.
If you and your equipment (cameras and the like) weigh more than 240 lbs you will be charged a $150 surcharge making this a $1,150 (or an over $200 an hour experience).
You will leave the Disney Wonder and board a motor coach at the port in Juneau. You will then take the short ride to the helipad. The 20 minute helicopter flight is breathtaking. You can only access Norris Glacier by air so you know that this is a place which few people ever see in a lifetime.
Once you reach the Alaska Heli Mush you will take a behind the scenes tour of the camp and meet the sled dogs of the Iditarod. You will interact with the sled dogs by brushing their coats, and even giving them a layer of sunscreen. Who knew that the sled dogs needed UV protection too?
You will then go through some training to learn the traditional musher commands. You will help harness your dogs to the sled and then head out on the glacier for a thrilling dog sled journey that you will never forget!
With this Disney Cruise dog sled experience you will get around 2.5 hours with the dogs including your sledding journey and interaction with the dogs at the camp. You will then journey back to the Disney Magic by helicopter and motor coach.
An unforgettable, but let’s not gloss over this, expensive experience.
Dog Sled Adventure by Helicopter (JU30)
The Dog Sled Adventure is another option in the port of Juneau when you are sailing on a Disney Cruise. This one is shorter at 2.5 to 3 hours and costs $770 for adults, and $770 for ages 2 to 9.
This is a shorter version of the Disney Cruise Alaska Dog Sledding in Juneau. The format is the same but you spend less time on the Norris Glacier. It saves you slightly less than $200 but you do sacrifice quite a bit of time on the Glacier and with the dogs.
In this excursion the dog sled ride will last about 20 minutes, and the visit to the camp will last around an hour.
Dog Sledding on the Mendenhall Glacier by Helicopter (JU01)
This is another option excursion from your Disney Wonder Alaska cruise. The cost is $724 for all ages. The 1 and under go free.
This doge sledding experience is on the Mendenhall Glacier. You will travel from the Disney Wonder by motor coach to the helipad and then take an approximate 15 minute alight over amazing Alaskan scenery to the dog sledding camp. You will have the opportunity to spend around an hour at the dog sledding camp, where approximately 240 dogs live. The actual sled ride lasts about 25 minutes.
Dog Sled Summer Camp (JU04)
This is a more reasonably priced Disney Cruise Alaska Dog Sledding excursion in Juneau but it is different to the other ones. You do not get the helicopter experience, but instead are taken to the Sheep Creek Valley by motor coach.
This excursion is suitable for all ages. The cost is $179 (ages 10 and up) and $169 (ages 3 to 9). Ages up to 2 are not charged. This will be the best option for you if you have a child under the ages of 2 on your Disney cruise to Alaska.
You will get to meet and interact with the Alaskan Husky dogs for a short time and then experience a dog sled with wheels. You will have approximately 15 minutes on the wheeled dog sled. That really isn’t very much time.
The excursion is fun, but it is a very different experience from the helicopter flight and the authentic dog sledding on the glacier. The advantage is the lower price and the availability for lower age groups if you have young children with you on your Disney Alaskan Cruise.
Disney Cruise Dog Sledding Adventures in Skagway Alaska
Juneau is not the only port where you can experience dog sledding adventures in Alaska on a Disney cruise. There are some port adventures involving dog sledding in Skagway, but they are much more limited than those offered in Juneau.
The Musher’s Camp & Sled Dog Experience (SW24) allows guests the opportunity to travel on a wheeled sled. You will leave the Disney Wonder and board a motor coach for an approximate 40 minute scenic journey to Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. You will then be shown to a 4×4 Unimog vehicles to take a 1.5 mile off road journey up to the top of the hill to meet the dogs. The journey on the wheeled dog sled lasts around 15 minutes.
The price for this excursion is $183 for adults and $152 for children aged 3 to 9. Ages 2 and under are no charge.
The Gold Panning, Sled Dogs & Scenic Railway (SW65) is also available in Skagway. On this excursion you will be taken by motor coach towards the Klondike Gold Fields. You will then see a movie about the sled dogs and get to spend around 75 minutes meeting and learning about these amazing animals. You do not get to ride a sled on this port adventure.
You will also see a movie about panning for gold and spend some time trying it for yourself.
You will then get back on the motor coach for a 15 minute journey to the train station. you will then board the train for the 210 minute journey. A motor coach will then take you back to the Disney Wonder.
This is a good excursion if you want to meet the dogs but don’t mind missing out on the sled experience. The cost is $254 for adults and $155 for children aged 3 to 9. There is not charge for those 2 and under. The port adventure lasts around 7 to 7.5 hours.
