The Disney Cruise Placeholder “Secret” That Could Save You Hundreds (But There’s a Catch)

Sharing is caring!

This is a way to save money on Disney Cruises that even experienced cruisers sometimes miss.

If you’re planning another Disney cruise and you’re NOT using a Placeholder booking, you’re basically leaving money on the table.

And I’m talking potentially hundreds of dollars here.

But here’s the thing…

You Can ONLY Do This While You’re Actually ON a Disney Ship

But that’s exactly what makes this so essential for people who are already hooked on Disney cruises (and let’s be honest, if you’ve done one, you’re probably already planning your next one).

Here’s how it works:

While you’re sailing, you can book what Disney calls a “Placeholder” – basically a dummy booking that locks in a 10% discount on your next cruise.

No specific dates required.

No commitment to which ship or itinerary. Just a $250 deposit that you can get back ANY TIME if you change your mind.

And get this – you have TWO FULL YEARS to decide when and where you want to sail.

So What’s the Real Benefit Here?

Simple: 10% off the current rate when you finally book.

On a $5,000 cruise? That’s $500 in your pocket.

On a $3,000 cruise? That’s $300 saved.

You do the math for your situation.

(Side note: Disney used to throw in onboard credit too – $200 for 7+ night cruises, $100 for shorter ones – but they killed that perk. Still, the 10% discount alone makes this worth it.)

But there is still a way to get onboard credit that we talk about here too.

But Wait – There ARE Some Rules

Because of course there are.

You can’t use this for:

  • 1 or 2-night cruises (but honestly, who’s doing those anyway as I have rarely even seen a 2 night?)
  • “Guaranteed” stateroom bookings (those IGT, OGT, VGT categories where Disney picks your room)
  • Certain blackout dates around holidays and peak times

And here’s the important part: The person who books the Placeholder MUST be on the final cruise booking. You can’t transfer it to your cousin or your neighbor or anyone else.

How to Actually Book This Thing

It used to be you had to visit the Future Cruise desk onboard (now those don’t even exist anymore).

Now? It’s easy and quick.

Just open the Navigator App while you’re on the ship and book it right there. Takes maybe 90 seconds.

You’ll get an email confirming it, and boom – you’re locked in for that 10% discount whenever you’re ready to pull the trigger on your next sailing.

I always take a screen shot of my booking as once it didn’t show up. The email sometimes takes a few days so it is always one of the first things I do on the cruise so I can double check that I have the email.

The “No-Brainer” Part

Here’s why this is basically risk-free:

That $250 deposit? Completely refundable.

Change your mind? Get it back.
Can’t find dates that work? Get it back.
Decide Disney cruises aren’t for you anymore? Get it back.

You literally cannot lose.

And you can book TWO Placeholders per stateroom, giving you even more flexibility.

Now Here’s Where It Gets REALLY Good…

Remember how I said Disney killed the onboard credit perk?

Well, there’s a workaround that most people don’t know about.

Within 30 days of booking your Placeholder, you can transfer it to a travel agent. And here’s the kicker – the right travel agent will give you onboard credit when you actually book your cruise using that Placeholder.

So you’re stacking benefits: the 10% Disney discount PLUS additional onboard credit from your agent.

I work with The Vacationeer travel agents and they’ll hook you up with onboard credit when you convert your Placeholder into an actual booking.

Think about it: You’re already getting the 10% discount from Disney. Now you’re adding onboard credit on top of that? That’s money you can use for excursions, drinks, spa treatments, whatever you want.

But you HAVE to do this within 30 days of booking the Placeholder. Miss that window and you’re stuck with whoever you initially booked with (or no agent at all).

Yes I Want Onboard Credit

“But I’m a First-Timer – Can I Do This?”

Well… yes and no.

You have to be ON a Disney cruise to book a Placeholder. So if you’re reading this before your first cruise, you can’t do it yet.

BUT – the second you’re onboard that first sailing and you fall in love with it (which, let’s be real, you probably will), you can lock in this discount for your next trip.

And if you’re smart about it, you’ll transfer that Placeholder to The Vacationeer within those first 30 days so you can maximize your savings when you’re ready to book.

What to Do

If you’re on a Disney cruise right now, or you’ve got one coming up, here’s your game plan:

  1. Book a Placeholder using the Navigator App (takes 90 seconds)
  2. Within 30 days, transfer it to The Vacationeer travel agents
  3. When you’re ready to book your actual cruise, you’ll get the 10% Disney discount PLUS onboard credit

No risk. No commitment to specific dates. Just guaranteed savings and perks whenever you’re ready.

The only way you lose is if you DON’T book it.
