Disney Frozen Let It Go – Who Sings It Best?

Disney’s Frozen is being quite rightly talked about as one of the best Disney movies ever made. Of course one of the major factors which makes the Frozen movie so magical is the music. One of the best loved songs from Disney’s Frozen is “Let It Go” which is performed in the movie by the actress who voices Elsa, Idina Menzel.

The music and lyrics for Frozen and Let It Go were composed by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. This powerful song comes at a pivotal point in the movie when Elsa escapes from her kingdom and realizes that she does not need to hide her magical powers anymore but can be who she really is. Unfortunately this comes at the price of isolation in her own frozen tower on the top of a mountain.

As soon as you hear this song you know it is going to be a Disney classic. Certainly up there with the iconic songs of Ariel and Belle. But something certainly confused me as I was watching the movie – I was wondering who the amazing voice was behind Elsa.

As soon as I got home I discovered that Idina Menzel played Elsa in Frozen. Idina is a Tony Award winning Broadway performer who is perhaps best know to date for playing Rachel’s mother Shelby Corcoran in Glee. The song Let It Go was written for her by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez and it is just perfect for her.

For those of you who love to sing along here are the Frozen Let It Go lyrics for the Idina Menzel version of the song from the movie:

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight, not a footprint to be seen.
A kingdom of isolation and it looks like I’m the queen.
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside.
Couldn’t keep it in, Heaven knows I tried.
Don’t let them in, don’t let them see. Be the good girl you always have to be.
Conceal don’t feel, don’t let them know.
Well, now they know!

Let it go, let it go.
Can’t hold it back anymore.
Let it go, let it go.
Turn away and slam the door.
I don’t care what they’re going to say.
Let the storm rage on.
The cold never bothered me anyway.

It’s funny how some distance, makes everything seem small.
And the fears that once controlled me, can’t get to me at all
It’s time to see what I can do, to test the limits and break through.
No right, no wrong, no rules for me. I’m free!

Let it go, let it go.
I am one with the wind and sky.
Let it go, let it go.
You’ll never see me cry.
Here I stand, and here I’ll stay.
Let the storm rage on.

My power flurries through the air into the ground.
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I’m never going back; the past is in the past!

Let it go, let it go.
And I’ll rise like the break of dawn.
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand, in the light of day
Let the storm rage on!
The cold never bothered me anyway.

Disney decided not to use this version for the recorded soundtrack of the Frozen movie. Instead Demi Lovato sings Let It Go. The writers said that they chose her in part because of her ability to relate to the lyrics – she has had struggles in the past which she has worked to put behind her.

For me the Idina Menzel version is so much better though. You can hear the Broadway star in the voice which is exactly what you need for this song. Not sure why Disney decided to play it safe and include the pop Demi Lovato on the soundtrack version. For me it just isn’s anywhere near as good as the original movie version.

There are a number of other versions of the song too recorded in different languages for the movie’s release in other countries.

Listen here to the Demi Lovato version of Frozen’s Let It Go to compare for yourself:

The Disney Frozen Let It Go Lyrics are slightly different for the Demi Lovato version too:

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn my back and slam the door

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I’m the queen

The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn’t keep it in, heaven knows I’ve tried

Don’t let them in, don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always had to be
Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know
Well, now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn my back and slam the door
And here I stand, and here I’ll stay
Let it go, let it go
The cold never bothered me anyway

It’s funny how some distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me can’t get to me at all
Up here in the cold thin air I finally can breathe
I know I left a life behind, but I’m too relieved to grieve

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn my back and slam the door
And here I stand, and here I’ll stay
Let it go, let it go
The cold never bothered me anyway

Standing frozen in the life I’ve chosen
You won’t find me, the past is so behind me
Buried in the snow

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn my back and slam the door
And here I stand, and here I’ll stay
Let it go, let it go
The cold never bothered me anyway, oh

Let it go
Yeah, yeah
Na, na
Here I’ll stay
Let it go, let it go
Ooh
Let it go
