Every so often a cruise news story comes along that genuinely stops you in your tracks.
This is one of those.
A 29-year-old Florida woman has been arrested and charged with four counts of child neglect after police say she left her four young children — including a two-month-old baby — home alone while she went on a three-night Carnival cruise to the Bahamas.
Here is what we know.
What Police Say Happened
According to North Miami Beach police, Nathalie Belizaire told the father of her two-month-old daughter that she would be dropping the children off with their great-grandmother while she was away.
That is not what happened.
The father became suspicious after seeing a post on Belizaire’s WhatsApp story on Thursday that appeared to show a cruise ticket purchase.
On Saturday evening he went to her North Miami Beach apartment to check on the children.
Through the blinds he could see the television was on.
And he could hear children talking inside.
But there was no sign of any adult.
He called 911.
What Officers Found Inside
Police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and forced entry into the apartment.
Inside, according to the arrest report, “all four minor children were discovered inside… without adult supervision and were hiding together in the bathroom.”
Body camera footage showed officers gathering the children up and leading them outside.
Two of the children’s ages have been released — one is two months old, and another is two years old.
The children had reportedly been alone for around three days.
The Great-Grandmother Had No Idea
When police spoke to the children’s great-grandmother, she confirmed that Belizaire had told her she “would be dropping the children off because she was going out of town.”
But she never brought them over.
Belizaire’s brother also told police that at around 8pm on the Saturday, his sister had texted him asking him to check on her children.
Police said repeated attempts to contact Belizaire were unsuccessful.
The Cruise
An investigation established that Belizaire had purchased a three-night ticket to the Bahamas aboard Carnival Conquest, sailing from Port of Miami on September 25.
That itinerary included a call at Celebration Key, Carnival’s new private destination in the Bahamas.
Carnival Conquest carries 2,980 guests at double occupancy and has been operating short Bahamas sailings out of Miami.
There were no reports of any incident onboard, and Carnival said in a statement to USA TODAY that “U.S. Customs and Border Protection escorted a guest off Carnival Conquest upon the ship’s arrival in Miami,” adding that it was “a law enforcement matter unrelated to the cruise or the operation of the ship.”
The ship sailed again on schedule.
Arrested as She Stepped Off the Ship
When Carnival Conquest returned to Port Miami on Monday morning, authorities were waiting.
Belizaire was taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Protection as she disembarked, and was later released to North Miami Beach police.
She declined to give a statement and invoked her right to remain silent.
What the Judge Said
Belizaire appeared in bond court on Tuesday, where bond was set at $10,000 and she was ordered to stay away from the children. She was released from jail that night.
Judge Mindy Glazer did not hold back.
“You cannot make this up. It says she went on a cruise and left her children home alone,” she said during the hearing. “These poor kids, four of them, were home alone for three days… I’m just grateful nothing worse happened to these kids.”
When Belizaire’s attorney said her client denies the allegations, the judge responded:
“they arrested her disembarking the cruise ship!”
The Charges She Faces
Belizaire is charged with four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm — one count for each child.
Under Florida Statute 827.03, each count is a third-degree felony carrying a potential penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
In theory, that means up to 20 years and $20,000 in fines across all four counts, although sentencing depends on a huge number of factors including criminal history and judicial discretion.
Her attorney says she denies the allegations.
Authorities say the children are safe and have been placed in foster care.
This Isn’t the First Time
Sadly, this isn’t an isolated case.
In April 2024 a Houston woman was arrested in very similar circumstances after leaving her two children, aged eight and six, home alone while she went on a cruise.
In that case, neighbours noticed her leaving with luggage and never coming back for the children.
