If you’re sailing from Port Canaveral, arriving the night before your cruise is one of the smartest travel decisions you can make.
Cruise lines strongly recommend flying in at least one day before your sailing, and after decades of cruising (and seeing plenty of travel delays), I completely agree.
Flights get cancelled, luggage gets delayed, and Florida weather can disrupt travel plans with very little warning.

Staying near the port the night before means you can wake up relaxed, enjoy breakfast, and head to the cruise terminal without worrying about missing the ship.
Another bonus?
It lets you start your vacation early. The Port Canaveral area has beautiful beaches, excellent seafood restaurants, and a fun cruise atmosphere the night before embarkation.
In this guide I’ll cover:
- The best hotels near Port Canaveral
- The difference between Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach hotels
- Which hotels offer cruise shuttles and parking
- The six hotels I recommend most for a pre cruise stay
These hotels are all located within about 10–15 minutes of the cruise terminals, making them very convenient for embarkation morning.
Why Stay Near Port Canaveral the Night Before Your Cruise?
Port Canaveral is one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, and it’s currently one of the main homeports for Disney Cruise Line.

Ships sailing from here include:
- Disney Wish
- Disney Fantasy
- Disney Treasure
- Royal Caribbean ships
- Carnival ships
- Norwegian Cruise Line ships
Because the port is so popular, thousands of cruise passengers arrive in the area the day before their sailing.
Most travelers fly into Orlando International Airport (MCO), which is about 50 to 80 minutes away by car depending on traffic.
That distance is one of the biggest reasons staying overnight is recommended. If your flight is delayed or cancelled, you still have time to adjust your plans without risking missing the ship.
Another reason to stay overnight is that the area itself is worth exploring. The Space Coast offers several attractions including:
- Cocoa Beach, one of Florida’s most famous beaches
- Kennedy Space Center, where NASA launches rockets
- Waterfront restaurants overlooking the cruise ships
- Port Canaveral’s lively cruise?night atmosphere
If you have time before your cruise, you might even catch a rocket launch, which is an unforgettable way to begin your vacation.
Cape Canaveral vs Cocoa Beach – Where Should You Stay?
When choosing a pre-cruise hotel, you’ll usually pick between Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach.
Both areas are close to the port, but they offer slightly different experiences.
Cape Canaveral
Cape Canaveral hotels are the closest to the cruise terminals, making them the most convenient option.
These hotels are usually designed with cruise passengers in mind. Many offer cruise shuttle services and even parking packages for guests leaving their cars during their cruise.
Pros:
- Closest hotels to Port Canaveral
- Easy shuttle access to cruise terminals
- Often more affordable
- Plenty of restaurants nearby
Cons:
- Limited beach access
- Less of a vacation atmosphere
These hotels are perfect if you want a simple overnight stay before boarding your cruise.
Cocoa Beach
Cocoa Beach is just 10–15 minutes south of the port, and it offers a much more vacation-style environment.
This area is famous for its sandy beaches, surf culture, and oceanfront restaurants.
Pros:
- Beautiful beach access
- More restaurants and activities
- Great for families arriving early
Cons:
- Slightly further from the cruise port
- Often more expensive than port hotels
If you’re arriving early or want to enjoy the beach before your cruise, Cocoa Beach is a wonderful option.

The hotel is located just a few minutes from the cruise terminals, making it extremely convenient. There is a cruise shuttle which is $9 per person.
Rooms are comfortable and spacious, with family suites available that are great for travelers cruising with children.
Another big benefit is the complimentary breakfast, which is perfect on embarkation morning when everyone wants something quick before heading to the port.
This is nothing fancy, but it certainly helps save costs, particularly when you are staying there with a family. You will be embarking on your cruise soon after so you don’t really need too much anyway!

The standout feature here is the large tropical lagoon-style pool, complete with waterfalls and palm trees.
It’s one of the nicest pool areas you’ll find in a Port Canaveral hotel.

The resort has a relaxed Florida atmosphere that makes it easy to get into vacation mode before your cruise even begins.
Rooms are comfortable and spacious, and the hotel has an on-site restaurant and bar, which is convenient if you don’t want to go out searching for dinner after a long travel day.

The hotel is located just a short walk from the ocean, so you can easily enjoy a sunset walk along the beach the evening before your cruise. It is beach side, not beach front, but the walk isn’t far.
If you have a larger family this hotel is particularly good value as some select rooms sleep up to 5.
Some rooms even have a oceanview.

Cocoa Beach also has plenty of restaurants and attractions nearby, including the famous Cocoa Beach Pier.
There is also a nice pool.

This hotel is especially popular with families who arrive a day or two early and want to add a little beach time to their cruise vacation.
Facilities include:
- Easy beach access
