If you’ve ever compared cruise line gratuity charges across different companies, you’ll know it can get confusing fast. Every line seems to have a slightly different rate and a different way of calculating it.

So I wanted to break down exactly where Disney Cruise Line sits compared to the rest of the industry — because it probably isn’t what most people think.

All rates are correct for July 2026.

Disney Cruise Line Charges Less for Gratuities Than Many Other Cruise Lines

Here’s the headline: if you’re sailing in a standard stateroom on Disney Cruise Line, you’re actually paying less in daily gratuities than guests on most other major cruise lines.

Disney adds $16 per person, per night to the onboard account for guests in standard staterooms.

That’s the rate that applies to every single guest onboard, including children of all ages and even infants.

You can adjust this up (or down but please don’t) but the $16 per person is what will automatically be charged each day.

Compare that to some of the biggest names in the industry:

• Royal Caribbean charges $18.50 per person, per day for standard staterooms
• Celebrity Cruises charges $18 per person, per day for Inside, Ocean View, and Veranda staterooms
• Norwegian Cruise Line charges $20 per person, per day for regular cabins and Club Balcony suites
• Carnival Cruise Line charges $17 per person, per day for standard cabins
• Holland America Line charges $17 per person, per day for standard cabins

So on a standard cabin, Disney’s rate genuinely comes in at, or below, most of its mainstream competitors — and it’s tied with MSC and Windstar for one of the lowest standard gratuity rates among major contemporary cruise lines.

But Here’s Where It Gets Interesting: Concierge

If you’re sailing Concierge on Disney, the story changes dramatically.

Disney automatically charges Concierge Stateroom and Suite guests $27.25 per person, per night — and this applies to every guest in that stateroom, all ages included.

To put that in perspective, here’s how that compares to the top-tier gratuity charge on other lines:

• Royal Caribbean suite guests pay $21 per person, per day
• Celebrity Cruises guests in The Retreat pay $23 per person, per day (with Concierge Class and AquaClass at $19)
• Norwegian Cruise Line Haven guests pay $25 per person, per day
• Holland America Line suite guests pay $19 per person, per day

That makes Disney’s Concierge gratuity rate one of the highest in the mainstream cruise industry — higher than Royal Caribbean’s suites, Celebrity’s Retreat, Norwegian’s Haven, Princess’s suites, and pretty much every other major line’s top-tier gratuity charge.

For a family of four sailing Concierge for a week, that’s a significant jump compared to a standard stateroom on the same ship.

What About Drinks and Spa Treatments?

Like most cruise lines, Disney also adds an automatic gratuity to certain onboard purchases.

Disney adds an 18% gratuity to bar, beverage, wine, and deck service tabs. This is actually on the lower end compared to many competitors:

• Royal Caribbean adds 18% on beverages and specialty items, but 20% on spa and salon purchases
• Norwegian Cruise Line adds 20% on spa/salon services, beverages, specialty dining, and entertainment-based dining
• Carnival adds an automatic 20% gratuity on beverage purchases
• Celebrity adds 20% automatically to beverages, mini bar purchases, and spa and salon services
• Princess Cruises charges a 20% service charge on bar charges, dining room charges, specialty dining, and spa services
• Holland America adds an 18% service charge to beverages, bar retail items, specialty dining cover charges, and spa services

So while Disney’s percentage-based charges are competitive with the lower end of the industry, several major lines — including some of the biggest contemporary brands — have pushed these add-on percentages up to 20% in recent years.

Pre-Paying Your Gratuities

One thing that’s worth knowing across the whole industry, not just on Disney, is that most cruise lines allow you to pre-pay your gratuities ahead of time rather than waiting until you’re onboard.

There’s a real advantage to doing this: if the daily rate happens to increase between the time you book and the time you sail, you lock in the rate that was in effect when you pre-paid.

If you wait and pay onboard instead, you’ll be charged whatever the current rate is at the time of your cruise.

If you don’t get around to it, there’s no penalty — the charges are simply added automatically to your onboard account instead.

Who Isn’t Covered by These Automatic Charges?
