Cruising is a fantastic way to explore the world. And, a Disney cruise is a unique way to experience the magic of the happiest place on earth without the stress of the theme parks.
But to make sure that everyone on board has a great experience, it’s crucial to follow certain rules and guidelines.
I know, you are on vacation and just want to have fun, but no matter how tempted you are to break the rules or just “try and get away with it” really just resist the temptation to do that.
Cruise ship rules are not made up out of nowhere. They have developed over the years for the health and safety of the guests and crew.
Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, understanding and following these rules is essential for a smooth sailing experience.
Don’t Sneak Drugs or Alcohol on Board
Once upon a time, you could bring as much alcohol as you could carry on to a Disney Cruise.
Even now, Disney allows you to bring a limited amount of alcohol on board.
But just follow the rules.
Bringing illegal substances or attempting to smuggle alcohol onto the ship is strictly forbidden. This rule is in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers.
And no. You can’t bring marijuana on a cruise. Even if it is legal in your country or state, it is still not allowed on a cruise.
Violations can result in severe penalties, including fines, disembarkation, and legal action.
Just don’t risk it. Stick to the rules.
Yes, they do check your bags. It really isn’t worth trying to smuggle alcohol onto a cruise.

No Underage Drinking
Cruise lines enforce strict age limits for alcohol consumption.
For most Disney Cruises, namely those sailing out of North America, the drinking age is 21.
For cruises from Australia and New Zealand the legal age is 18.
If you are sailing in Europe departing from any European country that has a lower drinking age, parents or guardians may sign a Beverage Consent Form that allows their 18- to 20-year-old children to consume alcoholic beverages while in the adult’s presence.
Attend the Safety Drill
I know. You have just started your cruise and you want all the fun to begin.
But before you set sail you do have to attend the safety drill, or muster drill as it’s often known.
Your muster drill location will be shown on your Key to the World card and also on the back of your stateroom door.
Some safety drills are out on deck, but others are held in restaurants and lounges.
A crew member will check your Key to the World card and it will be recorded that you have attended.
Pretty much every time I have gone to a safety drill it has been delayed because we are waiting for someone to attend. They know who you are, and the ship can’t sail unless everyone has been through the drill.
So please don’t be that family who turns up late when everyone has been waiting for you for 10 minutes so the drill can’t start. You will have hundreds of people putting the blame on you for the delay to the start of their fun.
No Smoking Indoors or on Balconies
Smoking is strictly prohibited in most indoor areas, cabin balconies, and public outer decks due to fire hazards.
Smoking in unauthorized areas can lead to severe fire hazards, endangering the lives of everyone on board. It is crucial to follow the ship’s smoking policies to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all passengers.
There are designated smoking areas on all Disney ships so if you need to partake you can go there.
Report Symptoms on the Health Form
It isn’t so long ago when we all had to provide a Covid test to even board a ship. Thankfully those days are behind us, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have to honestly report any symptoms on the health form.
Passengers must accurately report any symptoms of illness on health forms before boarding. This rule helps prevent the spread of contagious diseases on the ship.
Accurate reporting helps prevent the spread of contagious diseases on the ship, ensuring a healthy environment for all.
Passengers who report symptoms may be required to undergo a medical evaluation before boarding.
If symptoms are reported, medical staff will assess the situation and take necessary precautions to prevent outbreaks. This may include isolation or additional medical treatment.
I know some people may think they can just “take a chance” with this – but imagine if you were responsible for other guests becoming sick. Possibly people with compromised immune systems. Do you really want that?
Don’t Throw Items Overboard
Disposing of items overboard is prohibited to protect marine life and the environment.
This rule is in place to ensure the sustainability of our oceans.
Violators can face hefty fines and other penalties for disposing of items overboard. It is crucial to respect the ship’s environmental policies to protect our oceans.
No Reserving Pool Chairs
There is nothing quite like looking forward to an afternoon out on the pool deck, only to be confronted with a sea of pool chairs all covered in towels, with not an occupant in sight.
Granted, some of the pool loungers are being used by people who aren’t sitting on them right now, but are in the pool or have just gone to get a quick snack or a drink.
However, others are reserved for hours by planting a towel and a book there and never being seen again until the “occupant” returns at the end of the day.
Just please don’t reserve chairs unless you are using them.
Follow Dress Codes
Disney has very relaxed dress codes. You can wear a cocktail dress or Mickey Ears and a t-shirt if you want.
But keep it respectful and use your common sense.

Return by All-Aboard Time
When the cruise is in port it will be very clear when the latest time to return to the ship is.
Always check that you have adjusted your watch to ships time and understand exactly what the latest time you can return to the ship.
The ship will leave without you. I have seen it happen. More than once.
One advantage of booking a Disney Port Adventure is that the ship will wait for you if there is a delay.
However, the Captain will not wait for you if you have stayed for another margarita in the local bar!
