Flynn Rider Quotes

Sharing is caring!

Flynn Rider is one of the most beloved of all the recent Disney movie characters. And it’s not just for his smoldering good looks…..

Tangled, which debuted in 2010, was a welcome change from the traditional Disney Princess movie where the heroine is waiting to be saved by the handsome Prince. Flynn, the lovable, very charming, swashbuckling, and slightly less than the law-abiding hero is one of the most complex Disney characters.

Here are some of the very best Flynn Rider quotes from the Tangled movie. And you may also learn a little more about Flynn Rider’s character along the way.

Flynn Rider Quotes Introduction

Tangled starts with this bold opening narrated by Flynn Rider.

“This is the story of how I died. But don’t worry, this is actually a fun story, and the truth is, it isn’t even mine. This is the story of a girl named Rapunzel, and it starts with the sun. Now, once upon a time, a single drop of sun grew a magic golden flower. It had the ability to heal the sick and injured.”

Flynn Rider as the Lovable Thief

We know from the very start that Flynn is a thief. He even has the audacity to steal from the King and Queen. However, somehow we immediately all fall in love with this handsome rogue. Could it be because he doesn’t steal for personal gain – its more of just a challenge?

Whatever the reason, Flynn Rider’s handsome good looks certainly help. And of course the Flynn Ryder Smolder…

And we definitely know that Flynn knows how to have a good time:

Flynn Rider: The party lasted an entire week, and honestly, I don’t remember most of it

Flynn Rider Nose Quote

“Oh no. No, no, no, no, no. This is bad, this is very, very bad, this is REALLY bad! (pauses) They just
can’t get my nose right!”

It becomes a running joke that no one can draw Flynn’s nose correctly and it just gets worse and worse on the wanted posters.

This is a great video about how the directors of Tangled, Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, created the look of Flynn Rider – you may be surprised at just how complex this all was!

Another fun fact is that some of the original Flynn Rider concept art was used for the character of Kristoff in Frozen.

Rapunzel is No Pushover

Rapunzel may have been locked in a tower for most of her life, but she is certainly no pushover. Taken advantage of by the appallingly narcissistic Mother Gothel, Rapunzel may have lived a sheltered life, but she is certainly no wallflower.

Tangled has some wonderful moments when Rapunzel first meets Flynn Rider.

Rapunzel: Who are you, and how did you find me?

Flynn Rider: [clears throat] I know not who you are, nor how I came to find you, but may I just say… Hi. How ya doin’?

The Flynn Rider Smoulder

There is nothing quite like the look which is known as the Flynn Rider Smoulder. Who could possibly resist? Rapunzel is not convinced!

Rapunzel may have him tied to a chair with her hair, but Flynn hasn’t lost his charm.

Flynn Rider: Let me just get this straight, I take you to see the lanterns, bring you back home, and you’ll give me back my satchel?

Rapunzel: I promise.

[Flynn is not convinced and looks at Rupenzel questioningly]

Rapunzel: And when I promise something, I never ever break that promise.

[Flynn is still not believing her]

Rapunzel: EVER!

Flynn Rider: All right, listen! I didn’t want to have to do this, but you leave me no choice. Here comes the smolder.

[Flynn starts his infamous smolder, hoping to charm Rapunzel. However, Rapunzel is not impressed]

Flynn Rider: This is kind of an off-day for me. This doesn’t normally happen.

Flynn Rider: Fine! I’ll take you to see the lanterns.

Rapunzel: Really?

[She jumps up excitedly and lets go of the chair. Flynn falls flat on his face]

Rapunzel: Oops.

Flynn Rider: [pathetically] You broke my smolder.

Flynn Shows His Sensitive Side

Flynn may be handsome and charming, but we soon learn that he has a heart too. He most definitely has a handle on Rapunzel’s situation.

Rapunzel: [crying]

Flynn Rider: You know, I can’t help but notice you seem a little at war with yourself here.

Rapunzel: What?

Flynn Rider: Now, I’m only picking up bits and pieces here, of course. Overprotective mother, forbidden road trip. I mean, this is serious stuff. But let me ease your conscience. This is part of growing up. A little rebellion, a little adventure, that’s good. Healthy, even.

Rapunzel: [giggles] You think?

Flynn Rider: I know. You’re way overthinking this, trust me. Does your mother deserve it? No. Would this break her heart and crush her soul? Of course. But you’ve just got to do it.

Rapunzel: Break her heart?

Flynn Rider: [plucks grape off vine] In half.

Rapunzel: Crush her soul?

Flynn Rider: [crushes grape] Like a grape.

Rapunzel: She would be heartbroken. You’re right.

Flynn Rider: I am, aren’t I? Oh, bother.

Flynn Rider: All right. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m letting you out of the deal.

Rapunzel: [realizes what Flynn is trying to do] What?

Flynn Rider: That’s right, but don’t thank me. Let’s turn around and get you home. Here’s your pan, here’s your frog.

[hands her the frying pan and Pascal and puts his arm around her]

Flynn Rider: I get back my satchel and you get back a mother-daughter relationship based on mutual trust, and violà, we part ways as unlikely friends.

Rapunzel: [pushes him away] No. I am seeing those lanterns.

Flynn Rider: Oh, come on! What is it going to take for me to get my satchel back?

Rapunzel: [holds up frying pan] I will use this.

Flynn can also show great wisdom. He has a brilliant answer when Rapunzel is doubting her own dreams.

Rapunzel: I’ve been looking out of a window for eighteen years, dreaming about what I might feel like when those lights rise in the sky. What if it’s not everything I dreamed it would be?

Flynn Rider: It will be.

Rapunzel: And what if it is? What do I do then?

Flynn Rider: Well, that’s the good part I guess. You get to go find a new dream.

It is heartbreaking in Flynn’s death scene that they go back to this thought

Flynn Rider: You were my new dream.

Rapunzel: [crying] And you were mine.

Eugene Fitzherbert Becomes Flynn Rider

In the original version of the story, Disney envisaged Flynn as a Prince, just a he was in the fairytale upon which Tangled was based. This would certainly have fit the pattern of most of the other Disney Princess movies.

However, they decided to go in a rather different way with Flynn Rider. The lovable rogue who we meet in Tangled doesn’t appear to have any royal origins.

Of course, things can always change when more of a backstory is revealed. Flynn or Eugene doesn’t realize that he actually is a Prince during the Tangled movie.

We later learn that Flynn is the son of King Edmund of the Dark Kingdom, and was placed in an orphanage when his parents were forced to flee their lands.

Flynn, and therefore the audience, doesn’t become aware of this until Tangled: The Series. Here we just know him as Flynn the lovable hero who wins Rapunzel’s heart.

“Ahh.. yeah, well. I’ll spare you the sob story of poor orphan Eugene Fitzherbert. It’s a little bit of a… it’s a little bit of a downer. [Rapunzel moves
closer to Flynn, eager to listen to the story] There was this book. A book I use to read every night to all the younger kids. The Tales of Flynigan Rider! Swashbuckling
rogue, richest man alive, not bad with the ladies either. Not that he’d ever brag, of course.”

Rapunzel: Hmm. Was he a thief, too?

Flynn Rider: Well, no. Actually he had enough money to do anything that he wanted to do. He could go anywhere that he wanted to go. And – and for a kid with nothing, I don’t know. It just seemed like the better option. You can’t tell anyone about this, okay? It could ruin my whole reputation.

Rapunzel: Ah. We wouldn’t want that.

Flynn Rider: Well, a fake reputation is all a man has. Um, well I should um… I – I should get some more firewood.

Rapunzel: Hey. For the record, I like Eugene Fitzherbert much better than Flynn Rider.

Flynn Rider: Well, then you’d be the first. But thank you.

How Old is Flynn Ryder?

Flynn Ryder is 26 years old. With Rapunzel being 18 some may think this is an unfortunate age gap. However, Rapunzel is one of the Disney Princesses who has reached adulthood.

The youngest Disney Princess? Snow White was just 14. Obviously we aren’t ever going to have a Disney Princess under 18 anymore. In the latest Disney Princess movie, Frozen, Princess Anna is 18 and Queen Elsa is 21.

The biggest age gap between a Disney Princess and Prince? Snow White is believed to be 14. It is never confirmed in the Disney movie but speculation is that Prince Florian is in his late 20’s. Time’s change, fortunately – Snow White was released in 1937.

Flynn Rider and Rapunzel Tangled Romance

Rapunzel: Something brought you here, Flynn Rider. Call it what you will… fate… destiny…

Flynn Rider: A horse.

“Did I ever tell you, I’ve got a thing for brunettes?”

Flynn shows that, unlike Mother Gothel who desperately holds on to Rapunzel for her own ends, he is prepared to let her go:

Flynn Rider: All right. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m letting you out of the deal.
Rapunzel: What?
Flynn Rider: That’s right! But don’t thank me. Let’s just turn around and get you home. Here’s your pan, here’s your frog. I get back my satchel, you get back a mother-daughter relationship based on mutual trust and Voila! We part ways as unlikely friends.
Of course, the most romantic part of all the movie is “I See The Light”
Go on. Indulge yourself and watch and sing along to this beautiful song.

Do Rapunzel and Flynn Rider Get Married?

Do Rapunzel and Flynn get their happy ever after?

Flynn Rider: But I know what the big question is? Did Rapunzel and I ever get married? Well, I am happy to say after years and years of asking, I finally said yes.

Rapunzel: Eugene!

Flynn Rider: Okay, okay. I asked her.

Rapunzel: And we’re living happily ever after!

Flynn Rider: Yes we are.
